Gore, de Klerk among
Distinguished Speakers
The 2002-2003 Distinguished
Speakers Series brings to University Park five internationally known figures,
including a former South African president, the highest-ranking firefighter
to survive the World Trade Center collapse and an influential filmmaker.
The scheduled
speakers are:

Tipper Gore, 8 p.m. Monday, Sept. 9, Eisenhower Auditorium. As
an advocate for families, women and children, Gore is actively involved
in issues related to mental health, education and the plight of homeless
people. Gore served as mental health policy adviser to President Clinton
during her husband's tenure as vice president.

F.W. de Klerk, 8 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 10, Eisenhower Auditorium. While
president of South Africa from 1989 to 1994, Frederik Willem de Klerk
freed Nelson Mandela from prison, legalized the previously banned African
National Congress and led his nation's peaceful transition into black
majority rule.

Chief Richard Picciotto, 8 p.m. Monday, Nov. 11, Eisenhower Auditorium.
The highest-ranking firefighter to survive the World Trade Center collapse
and the last fireman to escape the devastation, Picciotto was on a stairwell
between the sixth and seventh floors of the North Tower when it collapsed
on Sept. 11.

Spike Lee, 8 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 28, Eisenhower Auditorium. Lee
has established himself as one of Hollywood's most important and influential
filmmakers during the past decade. His most recent film is "Summer of
Sam" (1999), which starred John Leguizamo and Mira Sorvino. His other
films include "Got Game," "Girl 6" and "Get on the Bus."

Mae Jemison, 8 p.m. Tuesday, April 22, Eisenhower Auditorium.
Jemison blasted into orbit aboard the shuttle Endeavor on Sept. 12, 1992,
becoming the first woman of color to go into space. A chemical engineer,
scientist and physician, she was NASA's first astronaut to serve as science
mission specialist on the STS-47 Spacelab J flight, a mission conducting
experiments in life sciences, material sciences and the Bone Cell Research
Experiment.
The Distinguished
Speakers Series is sponsored by the University Park Allocation Committee
and coordinated by the Distinguished Speakers Series Committee and the
office of Student Activities. Funded by student activity fees, the series
is free to the public. Tickets are required for the events and will be
available at the Eisenhower Auditorium box office about one week before
each lecture.

Development and Retention
Conference planned
New and returning graduate students of underrepresented groups will have an opportunity to meet faculty and staff at the annual Professional Development and Retention Conference to be held from noon to 5 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 25, at The Nittany Lion Inn on the University Park campus.
The goals of the conference are to assist underrepresented graduate students in acclimating to the University Park campus; to provide information on University support services; to offer networking opportunities; and to provide information and insights regarding graduate studies and the community.
The conference, sponsored by the Graduate School's Office of Graduate Educational Equity, includes a resources fair, colleague group sessions, professional focus sessions, and a keynote address.

Diabetes and cognitive
function to be discussed
Linda Hassinger will discuss "Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus and Cognitive Function in Very Old Age" from noon to 1 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 28 , in 108 Wartik Laboratory on the University Park campus.
The event is free to the public.
Colloquium to look at
intestinal iron transport
Matthias A. Hediger, associate professor of medicine (biological chemistry and molecular pharmacology) at Harvard Medical School, will speak at the Life Sciences Consortium's Colloquium that will be videoconferenced at 4:15 p.m. Sept. 10 from 101 Thomas Building on the University Park campus to Lecture Room D at Hershey Medical Center.
Hediger, who
also is director of the Membrane Biology Program at Brigham and Women's
Hospital, will discuss "The roles of intestinal iron transport in health
and disease."
Videoconference for
women set for Sept. 12
The
Pennsylvania Commission for Women is holding an interactive videoconference
for women from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 12, at a dozen locations
across the state including 108 Wartik Laboratory on the University Park
campus.
Topics
to be covered include: financial planning for women; the importance of
Social Security to women; patients rights; breast cancer awareness;
and women in politics.
