Faculty Senate to meet Oct. 22

The University Faculty Senate will meet at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 22, in 112 Kern Graduate Building, University Park. Items to be discussed include:

* Budget presentation for 2002-03 -- Executive Vice President and Provost Rodney Erickson will present a brief summary of the 2002-2003 operating budget with emphasis on cost derivers such as salaries and benefits, facilities and program adjustments. He also will summarize the University's budget plan and appropriation request to the Commonwealth for 2003-04.

* Employee benefits update for 2003 health plans -- report will examine recent and current issues in the health care and health insurance industries. Also, the report will focus on plan design, rate increases and other future issues. Retirement investments, long-term disability, employee assistance programs and other employee benefits information services will be presented.

* Update on the Penn State Dickinson School of Law -- informational report presented by Dean Philip McConnaughay will discuss the place of the Dickinson School of Law among other Big Ten law schools and what steps will be required to improve its rankings. He also will discuss the nature of recent trends in legal training and what Dickinson School of Law is doing to incorporate those changes in its curriculum.

Members of the University community may attend this meeting. Any member of the University community not a member of the Senate may request the privilege of the floor on any item of business already before the Senate. Such a request must be made to the chair, through the executive secretary of the Senate, at least four calendar days before the meeting at which the individual wishes to speak.
