Professor named orthopedics department chair at Hershey

Kevin Black, associate professor of orthopedics and rehabilitation, has been named C. McCollister Evarts chair of the Department of Orthopedics and Rehabilitation at the Penn State College of Medicine, Milton S. Hershey Medical Center.

Black assumes the reins of a department that is ranked fifth in the nation in research funding from the National Institutes of Health and provides a variety of high-level clinical services including: musculoskeletal oncology; orthopedic trauma surgery; joint replacement; bone and ligament reconstruction; pediatric orthopedics; foot and ankle surgery, treatment of spinal disorders; complex rehabilitation services, hand surgery, sports medicine and arthroscopic surgery.

Black is a board-certified orthopedic surgeon and a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania and University of Rochester School of Medicine. He completed his residency at the University of Rochester and his sports medicine fellowship at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation.

Black has served as interim chair of the department since November 2001. He also serves as director of the department's residency program. He joined the Hershey Medical Center and College of Medicine as associate professor and vice chairman of the department in 1993 following a six-year stint as director of sport medicine at the Medical College of Wisconsin from 1987-93.

Black also has served as an orthopedic consultant for the Green Bay Packers, company physician for the Milwaukee Ballet, and has been the team physician for the Hershey Bears professional hockey team since 1993.
