of Engineering Science, Mechanics 
Judith A. Todd has been named the new head of the Department of Engineering Science and Mechanics.
A native of England, Todd will serve as the P.B. Breneman department head chair and professor of engineering science and mechanics.
Before coming to Penn State, she was the associate dean for research at the Illinois Institute of Technology's Armour College of Engineering and Science and held the title of Iron and Steel Society professor. She served as a member of the IIT faculty for 12 years.
Todd's extensive teaching and research experience includes the University of Southern California; the University of California, Berkeley; State University of New York at Stony Brook; and Imperial College of Science and Technology in London.
Her areas of research expertise include bulk nanomaterials synthesis and manufacturing from highly non-equilibrium liquids; non-destructive evaluation of ceramic and ceramic matrix composite materials; development of a prototype laser-shaping system for advanced ceramic and ceramic composite materials; creep of advanced ceramic and ceramic materials; laser materials processing; ferrous metallurgy; and archaeometry.
Todd received her bachelor's
degree in materials science from England's Cambridge University. She also
received her master's degree and doctorate in metallurgy/material science
from Cambridge.
Weber promoted to associate
vice president for research
Gary W. Weber has been promoted to associate vice president for research and director of technology transfer in the Office of the Vice President for Research.
Weber had been serving as assistant vice president for research and director of technology transfer since joining the University staff in January 2000.
Before joining the University, Weber was senior vice president, science and technology, at PPG Industries where he led all science and technology for the company, including five laboratories, serving automotive, chemical, fiberglass, coatings, pharmaceutical and architectural businesses.
Weber earned his bachelor's
degree in ceramic technology at the University in 1965 and his doctorate
in ceramic science in 1974. He served in the U.S. Naval Nuclear Submarine
Service after graduation before returning to the University for his doctoral
degree.
