Professor emeritus
retires after 30 years
After 30 years of service to the University, Robert F. Nicely Jr. retired at the end of June with status of professor emeritus of education and associate dean emeritus.
From 1972 until 1979, Nicely was responsible for academic program development and supervision of the College of Education's outreach programs at the eight University campuses in western Pennsylvania.
In 1979, he joined the dean's office in the College of Education. In 1986, he was promoted to the rank of professor.
For 19 years (1979-1998) he served as coordinator, assistant dean and associate dean for outreach operations and administration, and in 1989 served as acting dean of the College of Education. During that time, he served as an elected member of Faculty Senate and also served on and chaired many academic, search and ad hoc committees at the college and university levels.
In 1998, Nicely resumed his teaching, scholarly writing and professional editing on a full-time basis in the departments of curriculum and instruction and education policy studies. During the last four years he also served as professor-in charge of the graduate program emphasis area in curriculum and supervision, graduate coordinator of the Department of Curriculum and Instruction and director of the Internship Program in Educational Administration.
Nicely served a number of professional associations in leadership capacities at the state and national levels. In June he also concluded 11 years of work as the editor of the Pennsylvania Educational Leadership journal. He has received numerous awards from professional organizations and the University.
He plans to continue with his writing, editing and program development work after retirement.
New Kensington's Howard
retires after 36 years
After a long and varied career at Penn State New Kensington, Bob Howard has retired from the University.
In his 36 years, Howard filled the following positions: assistant professor of kinesiology, intramural director, dean's representative, athletic director, basketball coach, tennis coach, volleyball coach and track and field coach.
In 1992, Howard received the Robert J. Scannell award for athletic leadership and service. He served as athletic director from the mid-1960s to 1985 and was head basketball coach from 1966-1979. He coached tennis from 1978-1984 and was named conference coach of the year. He led the volleyball team to the state finals seven times and won five conference championships. He was the cornerstone of a group that started the Commonwealth Collegiate Athletic Conference.
Howard plans to spend time with his wife and play golf during his retirement.
