On Jan. 21, 1965, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. spoke to an estimated crowd of 8,000 people in Recreation Building on the University Park campus about the civil rights movement, America's legacy of slavery and segregation, and the principles he believed would change the world. The following events are planned in honor of Martin Luther King Jr. and Black History Month:

Abington

Jan. 20: Guion "Guy" Stewart Bluford, U.S. astronaut, pilot and the first African-American to go into space, will speak at 11: 30 a.m. in 108 Lares Building.

Feb. 11: Dreck S. Wilson and Henry Magaziner will lecture on African-American architectural designer Julian Francis Abele at noon in 108 Lares Building.

Altoona

Jan. 19: MLK Kickoff Banquet and Unity Dance with Black Student Union.

Jan. 20: Birthday party with cake in Port Sky Cafe during the day. People will be signing pledges of non-violence.

Jan. 21: Unity Breakfast in Slep Student Center.

Jan. 22: Yolanda King speaks as part of the college's Distinguished Speaker Series.

Jan. 24: First film in a series that will run through Black History Month; films will include "Hurricane," "Get on the Bus" and "Higher Learning" and will be shown twice a week during Black History Month.

Jan. 30: Soul Sounds, 7 p.m., Wolf-Kuhn Theater.

Beaver

Jan. 20: Civil Rights Display, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Study Learning Center Lower Lobby.

Jan. 20: Bell Ringing Service,1:30 p.m., Study Learning Center Auditorium.

Jan. 20: "King's Dream," 2 p.m. This multimedia presentation using music, narrative and film clips from the Civil Rights Era is presented by Key Arts Productions in the Study Learning Center Auditorium.

Berks

Jan. 21: The multimedia presentation "King's Dream" will be performed at 1:30 p.m. in the Perkins Student Center Auditorium. For information, call Doreen Fisher at (610) 396-6067.

Delaware County

Jan. 20: The Philadelphia Chapter of the Tuskeegee Airmen will do a presentation at 12:30 p.m. in 203 A/C.

Jan. 21: The multimedia presentation "King's Dream" will be shown at 11:30 a.m. in 101 Main Building. A reception follows in the main lounge.

DuBois

Jan. 20: The observance begins at noon at the campus Peace Pole for readings and reflections, followed by the film, "In Remembrance of Martin," in the Hiller Building Auditorium.

Jan. 20: "Who Was Dr. King?" a free, one-man show by Bryan Barrows, will be presented at 7 p.m. in Hiller Building auditorium. Admission is free. For information, call (814) 375-4766.

Erie

Jan. 13: The Multi-Cultural Council and the Lion Entertainment Board co-sponsor Spike Lee's "Do the Right Thing" 7:30 p.m. in 117 Reed.

Jan. 14: The Multi-Cultural Council and the Lion Entertainment Board co-sponsor "Malcom X" at 7:30 p.m. in 117 Reed.

Jan. 15: Spike Lee on "America Through My Eyes," 7:30 p.m., Reed Union Building, McGarvey Common.

Jan. 20: Annual family breakfast for students, faculty and staff, Bruno's Café, Reed Union Building 7:15 to 8 a.m.

Jan. 20: "Reflections on the Dream, America Through Their Eyes," 4 to 5 p.m., Erie Hall. Classes are encouraged to relocate to Erie Hall. The program includes a recreation of the March on Washington; convocation by The Rev. J-LaVon Kincaid Sr., assistant to the bishop, United Methodist Church of northwestern Pennsylvania; perspectives of those who witnessed the march (students will read quotes and other material); and a performance by the Behrend Gospel Choir. A candlelight vigil will follow from Erie Hall to the chapel.

Jan. 22: Open Forum, "Reflections on the Dream; America Through Your Eyes," 7 to 8:30 p.m., McGarvey Commons, Reed Union Building.

Jan. 20-24: Service Project. Students will visit the Child Care Center preschool, where they will have children engage in activities that center on King's legacy. Students also will visit two elementary schools in Erie and the city mission.

Jan. 20-24: A time line in the shape of shoeprints will be displayed throughout the Reed Union Building leading to board where people can write the steps they are taking, or think should be taken, toward reaching the dream of a world of equality and justice. Other relevant displays will be placed around the Reed Union Building, and the "I Have a Dream" speech will be continuously played during the day on the large screen north of Bruno's Café.

Fayette:

Jan. 13: Pin Points Theatre presents "The Meeting," 7 p.m., Swimmer Hall, J.L. Williams Building.

Jan. 14: Outstanding area junior/senior high school students honored, Vernon Carraway keynote speaker, 11:30 a.m., Swimmer Hall, J.L. Williams Building.

Great Valley

Jan. 22: The Diversity Action Council will hold an interactive discussion, "Improving Organizational Effectiveness: The Value of Creating and Sustaining a Diverse Work Environment," from 7 to 9 p.m. in the Musser Auditorium. Panelists include: Juan Johnson, vice president of the Coca Cola Co. and president of the Diversity Leadership Academy; Barbara Gundy, partner and director of diversity of Towers Perrin Corp.; Ronald Mitchell, managing director of INROADS Philadelphia; Pedro Cortes, executive director of the Governor's Advisory Commission on Latino Affairs; Levi Wingard, superintendent of the Downingtown Area School District; and Phil Belfiore, associate professor of special education, Mercyhurst College.

Harrisburg

Jan 20: An original play, "Day Day's Quilt," will be performed from noon to 1 p.m. in the Student Center of the Capital Union Building. The event is free to the public.

Jan 20: The Rev. Marcia Dyson, author of "When Preachers Pray" and a contributing writer for Essence Magazine, will speak from 5 to 6 p.m. in the Quiet Study of the Capital Union Building. Her lecture will focus on an examination of ministerial misconduct, sexual exploitation and gender oppression in the black church.

Jan 20: The annual Community Talent Expo will take place from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. in the Student Center. King's life and dreams will be celebrated in song, dance and recitals.

Jan. 19: The Greater Hazleton Human Relations Coalition Martin Luther King Essay Contest awards ceremony will be at 2 p.m. in the Slusser/Bayzick Building. Winners are chosen from the local schools. Ann Van Dyke, from the Pennsylvania Human Relations Commission, will be the keynote speaker.

McKeesport

Jan. 17: "I had A Dream: A conversation with a Friend," featuring Greg Kenney as both Martin Luther King Jr. and the narrator, 12:05 p.m. 117 Frable 117.

Jan. 15: The Multicultural Club is sponsoring the annual Martin Luther King Jr. Candlelight Ceremony at 7 p.m. in front of Wiestling Hall.

Jan. 20: The Student Government Association and the Multicultural Club are working with "Communities That Care" to supervise a group of children who will be attending Shippensburg University's Martin Luther King Jr. Day programs.

New Kensington

Jan. 15: Birthday cake and punch will be available at noon in the Theater Lobby. Martin Luther King buttons will be distributed and an audio tape of famous speeches will be played.

Jan. 18 and 25: "A Day of Service," Habitat for Humanity Community Service Project.

Jan. 22: The Office of Student Affairs will sponsor a luncheon in honor of King's birthday from 11:30 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. in the Art Gallery. Cover charge is $6. RSVP deadline is Jan. 15.

Jan. 22: Key Arts Productions will perform "King's Dream," a mix of live and taped performances, at 12:30 p.m. in the theatre.

Jan. 27: Steel Impressions, a Caribbean steel band, will perform at noon in the Cat's Pause Cafe.

Feb. 5: Soul Sounds will present a musical journey through the evolution of Afro-American music beginning at noon in the theatre.

Feb. 25: Tina Williams-Brewer and Ahmand Francis will present an explanation of their artwork at 1:45 p.m. in the Art Gallery. Williams-Brewer's story quilts will be presented along with a slide show and Francis' pencil drawings of jazz musicians. Accompanies the free exhibit in the gallery, which runs through Feb. 28.

Schuylkill

Jan. 20: The Rev. Alfred Maloney, district superintendent of the United Methodist Church, Asbury-Anthracite District, will talk on "Celebrating the King" from noon to 1 p.m. in the John Morgan Auditorium. The Penn State Voices of Schuylkill Gospel Choir and the Pottsville African-American Heritage Coalition Students will perform.

Jan. 21: An original play, "Day Day's Quilt," will be performed at 7:30 p.m. in the Morgan Auditorium. The event is free to the public.

Jan. 20: Actor Gregory Gibson Kenney portrays both Martin Luther King Jr. and the narrator in a theatrical setting at the Lincoln Memorial where the two share a conversation about the speech King made at the memorial years ago, noon, Sharon Hall Student Union.
