Summer Day Camp For Girls To Focus On Science

4-14-98
University Park, Pa. --- A new day camp for girls in central Pennsylvania will focus on the fun and fascination of science this July at Penn State.

Outstanding area teachers with a background in science will be instructors at The Nittany Science Camp for Girls, based at Penn State's Stone Valley Recreation Area. They will provide a range of outdoor projects and hands-on science activities focusing on the area's lake, forest and wildlife. A wide range of topics from weather and geology to plants and water will be studied.

The emphasis will be on discovery, team-work and skill-building. The camp is intended for girls who will enter 6th or 7th grade this fall.

"We want to show young girls that science is a great experience and can be a fantastic career," says Josie Herrera, director of diversity enhancement programs in Penn State's College of Earth and Mineral Sciences and one of the camp's organizers. "Too often, girls are reluctant to become involved in science. This is the moment in their lives where we must inspire them to think about materials engineering, meteorology or geography as possible careers."

Camp sessions will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., July 6 through July 10, and July 13 through July 17. The cost for the five-day session is $150. Some scholarships are available. Transportation between Stone Valley and State College will be provided.

Those interested are encouraged to apply before May 7. For registration and additional information call (814) 863-2751 or email Herrera at jbh3@psu.edu
