Meteorologist Recognized For Weather Warnings

12-05-97
University Park, Pa. -- Gregory S. Forbes, associate professor of meteorology at Penn State, has received a Special Service Award from the National Weather Service, Eastern Region, in recognition of his outstanding work to improve central Pennsylvania's forecasting and warning system for severe weather conditions.

The award was presented to Forbes and his former student Matthew Pearce, a 1997 graduate in meteorology, at a ceremony held at the National Weather Service Office in State College.

Forbes was also cited for his "useful insight on interpretation of Doppler radar imagery... and for sharing his expertise and enthusiasm during severe weather events."

Over the past three years, Forbes has directed the COMET cooperative project to improve local storm forecasts, and coordinated surveys of storm events in which investigators reviewed storm activity and related radar patterns to storm characteristics, damage intensity and damage patterns. *aem*
