Liu And Xi Receive Science Foundation Awards

8-15-97
University Park, Pa. -- Ying Liu and Xiaoxing Xi, assistant professors of physics, have been named recipients of the National Science Foundation's Faculty Career Development Award. The award provides four years of funding to stimulate the early development of academic careers in science and engineering, supporting faculty members in the integration of research and education.

Liu is a researcher in condensed-matter physics whose work centers on superconductivity and mesoscopic physics. Liu's research is related to two-dimensional quantum phase transitions in ultrathin films, quantum tunneling of vortices, novel perovskite superconductors and disordered mesoscopic superconductors.

Liu's award will support his research on a project titled "Mesoscopic Physics of Disordered Superconductors: An Arena for Research and Education."

Xi's award will support his work on a project titled "Low Loss, Tunable Ferroelectric Thin Films by Pulsed Laser Deposition."
