Air Force Looking For Pilots, Navigators
10-28-97
University Park, Pa. -- Have you ever thought about becoming an Air Force pilot or navigator? Now might be a great time to try. Air Force ROTC (AFROTC) at Penn State's University Park campus has announced an unprecedented need for new pilots and navigators in the next few years.AFROTC graduates 1,800 officers each year at universities across the nation. Of these new officers, 650 will become pilots and 185 will become navigators -- many more than in years past. Penn State AFROTC, one of the largest detachments in the country, is looking for qualified high school seniors and college underclassmen to send to pilot or navigator training upon graduation.
Selections for pilot and navigator training are made on the basis of college grade point average, performance in AFROTC and physical fitness. Physical qualifications include: normal color vision of at least 20/50 for pilots and 20/200 for navigators, no history of asthma and a standing height between 5'4" and 6'5". Aspiring aviators will need a college degree and an officer's commission. One of the best ways is to attain a degree and a commission is through AFROTC.
Students attending Penn State's University Park campus may join AFROTC within their first two years of college. Students at Penn State Abington, Altoona, Delaware, Hazleton, Wilkes-Barre and Worthington-Scranton locations may also join through agreements with nearby colleges.
