
Dollars For Scholars Golf Classic Tees Off Sept. 5

University Park, Pa. -- The fourth annual Dollars for Scholars golf classic, sponsored by Penn State's College of Communications alumni society, will be held on Friday, Sept. 5, at Toftrees Resort. Proceeds benefit the student internship fund.The tournament begins with a scramble format and shotgun start at 2 p.m. Hole-in-one prizes on the course's four par-three holes include a 1997 Geo Metro, a golf vacation package for two, a set of Tour Edge fiber-sonic irons and a his or hers two-tone Seiko bracelet watch. Prizes will be awarded to the top three teams: closest to the pin on all par-threes, longest drive and straightest drive.
Net proceeds from the tournament will be contributed to the College of Communications Alumni Society Internship Fund. Awards from this fund provide financial aid to students in approved internships for academic credit.
Sponsorships include: tournament, $5,000; reception/dinner, $3,000; corporate, $1,000; and tee, $500. Individual golfers may enter the tournament or register for an individual lesson for $130. Entry fees include greens and cart fees or lesson, refreshments, driving range, reception and dinner.
Whether participants choose to sponsor golfers or play in the classic, they will help build the student internship endowment. Proceeds from the last three annual events added more than $40,000 to scholarship and internship funds. Internship awards are given to students with proven financial need and are valuable tools for recognizing and encouraging academic excellence. The registration deadline is Aug. 20, or until the course is filled.
