Lilien Receives Honorary Doctorate In Belgium

University Park, Pa. -- Gary L. Lilien, distinguished research professor of management science in Penn State's Smeal College of Business Administration, recently received an honorary doctoral degree from the University of Liege in Belgium.

Lilien, also co-founder and research director of the Institute for the Study of Business Markets, the world's leading organization focusing on research in the business-to-business marketplace, was one of seven scholars from France, Germany, Belgium, and the United States to be selected for recognition by one of Belgium's oldest and largest French-speaking universities. Other honorees included 1995 Nobel laureate, Paul Crutzen, and Professor Ted Belytchko from Northwestern University. Keynote speaker for the special ceremonies at Liege was Jean-Luc Dehaene, prime minister of Belgium and vice president of the European Community.

Lilien was recognized for his important and innovative contributions to the fields of management science and marketing analysis, as seen in his several books and extensive writings for such prestigious publications as Management Science, Journal of Marketing Research, Journal of Business Research, Marketing Science, Operations Research, International Journal of Research in Marketing, Journal of Marketing, and Industrial Marketing Management. He also has served as editor of the journals Interfaces, Management Science, and Marketing Science.

In addition, Lilien has provided leadership and service to key organizations such as The Institute of Management Sciences (president), Operations Research Society of America, American Marketing Association, European Marketing Academy, and the French Marketing Association.

His award required complete support of the faculty of economics, social sciences, and business and a minimum of a two-thirds vote of the entire faculty of 300. The University of Liege has a student population of 13,000 and offerings studies in the liberal arts, psychology, education, law, sciences, engineering, medicine, veterinary science, economics, management, and the social sciences.
