The Howard B. Palmer Faculty Mentoring Award honors and recognizes outstanding achievement by a faculty member with at least five years of active service at Penn State who effectively guides and nurtures the collegial and professional development of junior faculty. Howard B. Palmer was the senior associate dean of the Graduate School from 1984 to 1991.

The Graduate Faculty Teaching Award, established in 1992 by the Graduate School, is awarded to faculty members to recognize their outstanding teaching performance and for their advising of doctoral students.

The Graduate Program Chair Leadership Award is meant to recognize faculty members for exemplary leadership benefiting graduate students and faculty in an existing graduate degree program at Penn State. Such leadership includes, but is not limited to: enhancement of student recruitment, professional development and placement; mentoring and promotion of faculty and students in the program; enhancement of program diversity, educational quality, resources and national visibility; promotion of professional ethics and its integration into all elements of graduate programming (academic, research, professional conduct, etc.); other efforts that enhance the stature of the graduate program both internally and externally.
