A message from the
Vice Provost for Educational Equity
I'm sad and angry that this has happened to Penn
State students. Minority and African American enrollment at the University
is at an all-time high and for racists that makes a natural target.
It is an unfortunate sign of the times that people
who thrive on hate feel safe hiding in the anonymity of the Internet to
hurt others.
The University is taking this seriously; we have
committed a number of staff from several different offices to investigate
this case. We welcome the assistance being offered by both state and federal
law enforcement agencies. As a team we will pursue this aggressively.
Those who perpetuate hate have a long history of
hiding their identities. Those who embrace diversity have a long history
of standing up and being counted publicly. It is clear from the calls
and interest shown in this case during the past couple of days that the
majority of people at Penn State are ready to support the victims in any
way possible.
