Rao honored in White House ceremony

More than 200 people gathered in the East Room of the White House today (June 12) to witness the awarding of 15 National Medals of Science and five National Medals of Technology. Among those honored was Calyampudi R. Rao, emeritus holder of the Eberly Family chair in statistics and director of the Center for Multivariate Analysis at Penn State.

Calyampudi R. Rao brought his family to the East Room of the White House to see him receive the National Medal of Science.

Before the event, Rao's grandchildren, Amar and Rohith, got to talk with Maj. Joe Mazur, one of the security team members in the East Room of the White House.

President George W. Bush lauded the laureates as prophets of a better age who see the future before a lot of people see the present. He said, "They have earned these medals, and as they do so, they earn the thanks of their fellow Americans."

More than 200 guests and dignitaries were present in the East Room of the White House for the presentation of the medals.

After the event, President Bush shook hands with one of Calyampudi R. Rao's grandsons before leaving the East Room of the White House.

Both before and after the awarding of the medals, the U.S. Marine Band played in the Grand Foyer outside of the East Room of the White House. In the background, laureates and their guests filed out of the East Room and into a reception area for chance to chat informally with President Bush.
