Alan J. Snyder, Ph.D.

Alan J. Snyder, Ph.D., is professor of surgery at Penn State College of Medicine and professor of bioengineering at Penn State College of Engineering. He is also assistant chief, Section of Artificial Organs, for Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center, and director of the Office of Technology Development, an administrative unit responsible for assisting Medical Center personnel with issues involving intellectual property and encouraging conduct of research that leads to commercialization.

An integral part of the team that worked on the pre-clinical development of the Arrow LionHeart , Snyder continues to contribute to advances in mechanical artificial heart technology.

Snyder received his B.S. in engineering science in 1978 and his Ph.D. in bioengineering from Penn State in 1987. His research focuses on implantable mechanical artificial heart devices, ventricular assist devices and control of artificial organs. He also has interests in minimally invasive surgery and applications of new materials and nanotechnology to medicine.

Snyder is the author of numerous book chapters, scientific publications and presentations.
