Penn State — Pennsylvania's Land-Grant University

Making Life Better for 150 Years

May 2004

Dear Friend of Penn State:

This year, 2004, marks the beginning of the celebration of the 150th anniversary of Penn State’s founding, and I have been working with Penn State officials to have this prestigious occasion properly acknowledged in the State Legislature.

I have sponsored and introduced in the House of Representatives House Resolution 600 which congratulates The Pennsylvania State University on the commencement of its sesquicentennial celebration and reaffirming its designation as Pennsylvania’s land-grant university. In 1854, The General Assembly first issued a charter to the Farmers’ High School of Pennsylvania. The following year, a permanent charter was issued by the General Assembly for “an institution for the education of youth and the various branches of science, learning and practical agriculture” for what was then known as the Farmers’ High School which was later named Penn State College, now The Pennsylvania State University.

On March 29, I had the honor of serving as the Master of Ceremonies and featured speaker for a press conference held in the State Capitol Rotunda announcing the introduction of House and Senate Resolutions which congratulate Penn State on the 150th anniversary of its founding and its service to the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. After the press conference, I hosted Dr. Graham Spanier and other Penn State University officials on the floor of the House of Representatives for the formal vote of House Resolution 600.

It is a pleasure to inform you that House Resolution 600, co-sponsored by State Rep. Kerry Benninghoff, was unanimously passed by the House of Representatives by a vote of 187-0. Senator Jake Corman sponsored a similar Resolution in the State Senate (SR 209).

For your information, you can access a copy of House Resolution 600 and the remarks I made at the historic press conference at http://live.psu.edu/landgrant. I serve on the House Education Committee and Subcommittee on Higher Education and am Penn State proud to be part of the historic ceremony on Penn State’s day to shine under the Capitol dome.

It has been a pleasure and my distinguished honor to represent the interests of The Pennsylvania State University in the State House of Representatives. Should you need any additional information, or if I can be of further service to you in any way, please feel free to contact me.

Sincerely, Lynn B. Herman
State Representative
77th Legislative District
