1. Annual research expenditures hit $780 million, have broad impact
Penn State's research expenditures totaled an all-time high of $780 million for the 2009-10 fiscal year, an increase of about 2 percent over the previous year and a 77 percent increase over the past decade, according to Henry C. Foley, vice president for research and dean of the Graduate School.

2. University-wide enrollment up slightly for 2010
As a fifth straight year of record applications and official 2010 enrollment figures indicate, Penn State remains one of the most popular flagship institutions of higher education, for undergraduate, graduate, online, law and medical students. Several Commonwealth Campuses and the World Campus have experienced notable increases that have contributed to a total University enrollment of 95,833 students.

3. Stephen Benkovic to receive National Medal of Science

Benkovic, Evan Pugh professor of chemistry and holder of the Eberly family chair in chemistry at Penn State, is one of 10 eminent researchers recently named by U.S. President Barack Obama to receive the 2010 National Medal of Science, the nation's highest award for lifetime achievement in scientific research.

4. Beaver Stadium named No. 3 'Saturday Shrine' by Sporting News
Penn State's Beaver Stadium has been selected the No. 3 "Saturday Shrine" by a Sporting News expert panel. The home of the Nittany Lions earned the nation's No. 3 ranking from a panel of current and former college football coaches and broadcasters. The panel weighed each of the nation's stadiums by the facility, the fans and atmosphere, the city and surroundings, traditions and history.

5. Penn State student-athletes continue record graduation rates
Penn State student-athletes continue to graduate well above their peers nationwide, earning record-setting academic performances, according to statistical information released today by the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). The NCAA's annual study of institutions nationwide revealed that Penn State student-athletes at the University Park campus earned a record Graduation Success Rate of 90 percent compared to a 79 percent average for all Division I institutions for students entering from 2000-01 through 2003-04.

6. Penn State named Campus Sustainability Leader in national survey
Penn State has been named a national Campus Sustainability Leader and received a B+ rating in the Green Report Card survey conducted by the Sustainability Endowments Institute. The College Sustainability Report Card is an independent evaluation of campus and endowment sustainability activities at colleges and universities across North America. 7. Restaurant customers willing to pay more for local food
Not only are restaurant patrons willing to pay more for meals prepared with produce and meat from local providers, the proportion of customers preferring local meals actually increases when the price increases, according to a team of international researchers that includes Amit Sharma, assistant professor in Penn State's School of Hospitality Management.

8. Student project may give developing world simple, cheap clean water
Ten dollars' worth of PVC piping and hardware may be the key to providing cleaner drinking water in the developing world, if civil engineering student Lydia Karlheim's project comes to fruition. Karlheim has been developing a chlorination device designed to simplify water purification, and this past summer traveled to Tiout, Morocco, to examine the village's water source and delivery system.
