Students perform at Heinz Hall

Saturday was a busier day than normal for roughly 185 Penn State musicians. The students, members of the Symphonic Wind Ensemble, Philharmonic Orchestra, Centre Dimensions Jazz Ensemble and Concert Choir, woke up early, boarded buses at University Park, and headed out to Pittsburgh. When they arrived at Heinz Hall shortly before noon, they found the instruments they had loaded onto a rental truck at University Park already had arrived and been unloaded. Pausing for only a few moments to soak in their surroundings, they quickly got busy with rehearsals for what many of them later described as a wonderful, incredible experience -- playing and singing before a large audience at the Penn State City Lights President's Concert at Heinz Hall.

Students compete in machine contest

More than 300 people attended the second annual Rube Goldberg Machine Contest in Heritage Hall at the HUB-Robeson Center, University Park. This year's task challenged students to build a machine that could squeeze a tablespoon of juice from an orange. The event, which was free to the public, was held Feb. 23. Inspired by the "Inventions" cartoons of Rube Goldberg (1883-1970), the annual contest pushes students beyond traditional problem solving by challenging them to design a complex machine to complete a simple task. This year's task was to design a machine that takes a whole orange, juices it and pours the juice from a pitcher into a cup in 20 or more steps. The Penn State Rube Goldberg Machine Contest was sponsored by the Penn State Engineering Society. More information is available at http://www.engr.psu.edu/NewsEvents/rube.asp online.
