Hometown support

Happy Valley’s hometown favorite, Larry Johnson, has plenty of support for the Heisman Trophy. The senior Penn State running back, who last night won the Maxwell award, given to the nation's top collegiate football player, and the Doak Walker Award, presented annually to the nation's top collegiate running back, and was named the Walter Camp Player of the Year and a first team Walter Camp All-American, is getting a great deal of backing from State College’s business district where blue and white “LJ for the Heisman” posters are plastered on doors and windows throughout downtown State College.

First significant snowfall
of season blankets Penn State

The calendar may say the start of winter is still more than two weeks away, but people at Penn State's University Park campus awoke to a wonderland of white this morning. Approximately 7-9 inches of snow are forecast to fall on campus through Thursday, with some other Penn State locations -- particularly in the southern and eastern parts of the Commonwealth -- expecting nearly a foot of the white stuff.

Spiritual Center
expansion progressing

The roof is on, and the interior rooms are beginning to take shape in the Pasquerilla Spiritual Center on the University Park campus. The project, which is expected to be completed at the end of March, will add roughly 29,400 square feet of worship and program space to the existing Eisenhower Chapel, which currently is roughly 24,000 square feet. The resulting building will be one of the largest religious centers on a public university campus in the nation.

at Beaver Stadium

A lot more goes on in Beaver Stadium on the University Park campus on a football Saturday than is immediately apparent to the average football fan. Amy Neil, assistant manager of the News Bureau in the Department of Public Information, and senior advertising/public relations student Courtney Beisel spent the day at the stadium this past Saturday and captured some of the other activities that were going on off the field while the Nittany Lions battled Virginia.

House going up with
student design and labor

Students are helping to fill the fall air with the sound of hammers and saws on Cherry Street in Port Matilda so that a deserving local family will have a new home to stay warm in soon. In the spirit of service learning, volunteer students from a variety of academic disciplines raised the funds for, designed and are building one of the two new Habitat for Humanity houses that are going up side-by-side in the small Centre County town.

Hooray for homecoming

Penn State’s 2002 homecoming celebration brought the young and the young at heart to University Park to celebrate this past weekend. Homecoming activities included a reception at the Hintz Family Alumni Center and the homecoming parade, both held Friday, Oct. 18. The celebration continued at Beaver Stadium Saturday, Oct. 19, where the Nittany Lions shut out Northwestern 49 to 0.

Sixers practice at Jordan Center

Rush to Recycling

A significant amount of recyclables was collected by 88 student volunteers at Beaver Stadium after Saturday’s football game against Louisiana Tech. The students were joined by David Hess, secretary of the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP), and several recycling mascots for the kickoff of a “Rush to Recycling” campaign. Through the campaign, the University has been challenged to increase the amount of recycled material collected at the games and on campus.

Gubernatorial Debate
at Eisenhower Auditorium

The first face-to-face salvos in Pennsylvania's race for the governor's office were fired last night on the Penn State campus in the initial IssuesPA Gubernatorial Debate of the fall campaign season. The event drew a crowd of approximately 1,100 to Eisenhower Auditorium as well as live viewers of the seven public broadcasting stations comprising the Pennsylvania Public Television Network.

Media Day at Beaver Stadium

Arts Festival enjoys good weather

The sidewalk sales portion of the Central Pennsylvania Festival of the Arts opened yesterday and continue through Sunday, with mild weather ushering bustling crowds of viewers and buyers into downtown State College and onto Penn State's University Park campus. More than 350 fine artists and craftspeople from throughout the United States and Canada are on hand through Sunday, July 14, for the festival's largest edition in more than a decade.

SALA Building is Penn State's
first certified sustainable architecture

Carlisle, Pa. – Sketch/preliminary plans for the School of Architecture and Landscape Architecture (SALA) Building at the University Park campus, the first new Penn State building being designed to meet the national criteria for certification as environmentally-friendly “sustainable architecture,” were approved by the Board of Trustees today (July 12) at its meeting at the Dickinson School of Law of The Pennsylvania State University.

Emergency drill a collaboration
between Penn State and community

A training exercise involving Penn State police, EMS, HazMat, along with more than a dozen local government and community agencies, was held Wednesday, May 22, at the University Park Airport. By federal law, the airport is required to conduct emergency drills every three years.

Public Television celebrates 50th anniversary

The program vision for national, noncommercial, educational television, what we now know as public television, was established 50 years ago at a national conference at The Nittany Lion Inn on the University Park campus and presided over by then-Penn State President Milton Eisenhower.

Golf pro breaks Guinness World Record

Christopher Cain, the PGA head golf professional at the Penn State Golf Courses, broke the Guinness World Record for the most golf holes played in 12 hours on April 17. Cain played a total of 505 holes, shattering the old record of 476.

Penn State Intercollegiate Athletics held a special send-off to honor the Lady Lion basketball team as it departed today (March 21) for the NCAA’s “Sweet Sixteen” in Milwaukee, Wis. The Pep Band, the Nittany Lion and cheerleaders saw the team off in The Bryce Jordan Center’s South Parking Lot.

Board of Trustees meets in Washington, D.C.

The Board of Trustees met in Washington, D.C., March 14 and 15, marking the first time the board has met outside of Pennsylvania.

“What happens in Washington directly affects what happens at Penn State,” said Penn State President Graham B. Spanier. “National education policies emanate from Washington, as well as federal funding for critical research, national defense concerns and student aid.”

Campus gates move

As part of the construction for the Information Sciences and Technology Building, the Lion Gates at the Pollock Road-Atherton Street intersection on the University Park campus have to be relocated one block, to the intersection of Pollock Road and Burrowes Road. That process got under way Feb. 28.

THON raises record amount

This past weekend, 660 dancers hit the floor at Rec Hall on the University Park campus to participate in The Penn State IFC/Panhellenic Dance Marathon, a 48-hour, no-sitting, no-sleeping fundraising event that benefits The Four Diamonds Fund. The participants this year raised in excess of $3.6 million during the event.

Holiday tree raised in Old Main lobby

Thanks to the donation of a tree from Moose Craul, of Maple Hill Farm in Wellsboro, Pa., the annual holiday tree was recently put in place and decorated in the lobby of Old Main.Many other trees decorate campus and offices throughout the University as well.

The Penn State Veterans Organization honored all veterans of the U.S. military on the steps of Old Main at noon today (Nov. 9, 2001). The list of speakers included state Sen. Jake Corman, R-Bellefonte, and local military leaders. In addition, there was a rifle salute by the Pennsylvania Air National Guard.

Memorial sculpture installed

A memorial sculpture honoring the victims of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks was installed Sunday, Nov. 11, in front of Pattee Library on the University Park campus. The sculpture features approximately 5,000 waterproof black panels representing the current number of people listed as dead or missing from the attacks.

Bronze statue erected in honor of Joe Paterno

A larger-than-life bronze sculpture of Joe Paterno, commissioned by Friends of Joe and Sue Paterno and Penn State, was erected earlier today outside the east side of Beaver Stadium. The statue, honoring Paterno’s contributions to the University and his becoming the NCAA Division I-A all-time victories leader with 324 victories, is approximately seven-feet tall and weighs almost 1,000 pounds.
