From tree to furniture: A recycling story
A diseased tree near the Hintz Family Alumni Center
-- thought to be the oldest elm tree on Penn State's University
Park campus -- had to be removed recently. The elm is believed
to have been more than 125 years old, and was one that former
Penn State President Milton Eisenhower and his brother, U.S. President
Dwight D. Eisenhower, used as a backdrop both for official portraits
and informal photographs. Instead of disposing of the wood, however,
Penn State embarked upon the ultimate recycling project. The following
pictures trace the tree's journey over the past year.

Penn State Police Officer Titus may be the most
dogged pursuer of crime in his unit on the University Park campus.

dog. He patrols the campus with his handler, Officer Mark Allen.
The chocolate Labrador retriever has been part of the unit since
December 2001. Stop by University Police headquarters at the Eisenhower
Parking Deck and visitors are likely see a bright-eyed, glossy-coated
dog roaming the halls, being petted and patted by the passing
police officers. “He pretty much runs the place,”
Allen said.

Quote of the Day: Cartoonist Tony Auth at the Forum
"The more people believe passionately in an
issue, the less they want to see anything critical about it in

they've already reached. I think my highest concern as a journalist
is not to become a propagandist, and so I get an almost mischevious
delight in going against the grain."
