Caring students stay behind to see to animals' needs
Finals are over. Commencement ceremonies are a memory
and the academic year is winding down at University Park. But,
that doesn't mean the University is completely empty or that all
of the students have decamped for places unknown. Somewhere between
30 and 40 students stay behind over semester breaks to take care
of the animals used in agricultural programs. They feed, water
and clean pens along with snow removal and other duties. Kyle
Grim, a sophomore majoring in animal science, is one of those
students. He and other students, bunk in living facilities at
the barns. Students are paid for the hours they put in.

Concession stands earn funds for student groups,
local charities
Penn State's economic impact on the region during home football
games has been well-documented. However, the impact reaches beyond
the obvious money spent on hotel rooms and at restaurants and shops
downtown. Even the souvenirs and food purchased at Beaver Stadium
have an economic impact beyond the University, thanks to a give-back
program that returns 13 percent of the proceeds from sales at concession
and souvenir stands at Beaver Stadium to the student and community
organizations that operate the stands. In addition, groups can earn
an extra percent (14 percent total) if they hawk food and drink
products in the seating areas, according to David L. Baker, assistant
athletic director at Penn State. Here, Margaret Brennan, left, and
Gillian Friday sell souvenirs at one of several stands set up outside
Beaver Stadium before the Penn State-Wisconsin game Nov. 5. Brennan
and Gillian are working the stand for Circle K, which expects to
earn between $5,500 and $6,000 this year. Read the full story at

Early snow blankets campus
The treat of unseasonably warm weather earlier this month
was replaced by a nasty trick by the weather today. This first snowstorm
of the season was supposed to fall mainly as rain, but the weather
system is being impacted by what State College-based Accu-Weather
is terming "SuperStorm 2005." According to Penn State
Campus Weather Service staff member Anthony Chipriano, an upper-level
trough of low atmospheric pressure combined with the remnants of
Hurricane Wilma, causing snow showers on campus and across the Northeast.
As of early afternoon Tuesday, meteorologists at University Park
recorded an inch of accumulated wet snow, and projected up to an
additional two inches by early Wednesday from light showers and
flurries, with lingering cold air maintaining slushy walkways and
mostly wet roads. The storm currently is producing winds in excess
of 40 mph from New Jersey to New England.

Police, emergency medical personnel keep fans safe
Two important groups of people at every Penn State football game
are the police and the emergency medical personnel. Both of these
groups staff games from early morning until after the game ends,
making sure those attending the game stay safe. Police and emergency
medical personnel patrol the parking lots before the game, as well
as keeping watch inside the stadium during games. Both groups deal
with a wide variety of situations, as depicted in part in the photos
that follow. During the morning briefing before the Central Michigan
game on Sept. 17, police officers were told that tailgaters' tents
were becoming a problem because they were being set up in driving
lanes, which would impede emergency vehicles should they need to
get through. On foot patrols through Lot 25 before the game, Penn
State Police Officer Vicki Aiken came across two tents that were
completely blocking the travel lane, and directed them to move them
to safer locations. Aiken and her partner, Matt Shupenko, began
their foot patrol shift at 9:45 a.m. for the 3:30 game.
