4th Fest readies for Independence Day blast

With four days until the big boom, staging headquarters for the Central PA 4th Fest are starting to get frenetic. The big fireworks extravaganza that gets under way at 9:20 p.m. July 4 from the fields near Beaver Stadium is billed as biggest volunteer fireworks display in the nation. It takes about 10,000 volunteer hours, a cost of $200,000 for event day and another $200,000 for in-kind services to put on the production. Exhibit opens at Palmer

The exhibition "Dialogue and Diversity: Recent Work by Faculty" in the School of Visual Arts at Penn State, has opened at the Palmer Museum of Art, University Park. This is "The Encosmic Hearer," by Robert Yarber.

Bellefonte Central Rail Trail moves closer to completion

Contractors are laying crushed limestone on the Bellefonte Centrail Rail Trail project that will link the trailhead at the McKee Street entrance of Sunset Park with the interior of Big Hollow at Penn State. A grand opening for the trail is scheduled for late September. The trail is part of the ongoing Arboretum at Penn State project at University Park.

Presidential visits to Penn State

Over the years, Penn State has been honored by visits from numerous presidents and presidential family members. Dwight Eisenhower visited the Penn State University Park campus four times during his presidency (1953-1961) and was the only president to stay overnight.

Map of traffic, parking detours

Traffic patterns for motorists and pedestrians around Eisenhower Auditorium will be altered for most of the day Tuesday due to a speech by President George W. Bush to the annual FFA state convention. Most notably, Eisenhower Road between Bigler and Shortlidge Roads will be completely closed to vehicles and pedestrians. Several parking lots in the vicinity of the auditorium also will be closed.

Foundation takes next step in return of chestnut trees

Volunteers from the Pennsylvania Chapter of the American Chestnut Foundation spent about three hours Wednesday, June 8, innoculating some 250 hybrid trees with chestnut blight. Next spring survivors will be chosen that will produce blight-resistant chestnut seed for reintroduction into Pennsylvania forests. The trees are located in an orchard in The Arboretum at Penn State on the University Park campus.

Plastics program gains grant

Brad Johnson, left, lecturer in engineering, demonstrated the use of the Sumitomo Injection Molding Machine to U.S. Secretary of Labor Elaine L. Chao, center, when she came to Penn State Erie on June 3 to announce that the Pennsylvania State Workforce Investment Board, in collaboration with Penn State, will receive a $3.75 million grant from the Department of Labor to increase business retention and growth within the plastics industry. High Tunnel facilities provide produce for Cellar Market

Fresh turnips, like these, as well as kohlrabi, a variety of greens and mushrooms are on sale at the Cellar Market, adjacent to Eisenhower Auditorium on the University Park campus. The market is part of an initiative by the Department of Horticulture, which will eventually teach produce marketing techniques to students.

The fourth annual Trash to Treasure sale will be held from 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, May 28, at Beaver Stadium, University Park. Students began dropping off donations at residence hall collection points on April 26.

State funding presented for materials research

On May 18, Pennsylvania Gov. Edward G. Rendell released $40 million in state funding for construction of the new Materials Research Building on Penn State's University Park campus. Erie's Math Options encourages girls to seek math careers

Penn State Erie's ninth annual Math Options, held Tuesday, May 10, was a daylong program designed to encourage girls to pursue advanced level math and science courses in their studies and ultimately math, technology, business, and science-related careers. Math Options addresses a problem recognized by a growing number of educators and mentors. Young girls need role models and encouragement if they are to pursue math-related careers.

Henry Varnum Poor's Land Grant frescoes celebrated in Palmer exhibit

Muralist Henry Varnum Poor, celebrated for his Land Grant frescoes in Old Main, is the subject of an exhibit continuing through June 5 in the Palmer Museum of Art, University Park. The self-portrait of the artist is from Paris in 1930. Born in 1887, the artist died in 1970. The exhibit features many of the sketches the artist used to prepare for his work in Old Main. The following photos feature Poor's sketches juxtaposed with details from the finished frescoes.

Festival celebrated the works of August Wilson

The August Wilson Play Festival was held from April 27 to April 30 on the University Park campus. It is the first time ever for an event to address all 10 epic plays of the Pittsburgh-born, African-American playwright through production, play readings or discussion.

Students' work featured at conference

Senior engineering students at Penn State Erie were front and center at the Richard J. Fasenmyer Senior Design Conference, held April 30. Sharply dressed, the teams gathered to prepare for their 30-minute presentations, well-rehearsed and ready for family, friends and industry sponsors. This year's conference was the 10th, and to recognize the anniversary, officials named the event for the late Richard J. Fasenmyer, an alumnus of Penn State who attended Penn State Erie from 1967 to 1969. Fasenmyer was named a Distinguished Alumnus in 2000, served on the Behrend Council of Fellows and was a member of the Penn State National Development Council.

Art students incorporate chairs into their sculptures

Ninety-three students on the University Park campus of Penn State in an introductory sculpture class are going to try. After selecting from a list of 19 words that relate to movement or lack of it, they have created chairs that express, in visual form, the concepts implied by their word. Installation of the outdoor artwork began on April 26 outside the Arts Building, and the chairs will be on display through May 1.

The August Wilson Play Festival will take place April 27-30 at Penn State's University Park campus. Part of his projected 10-play cycle chronicling the 20th century African-American experience, the 1970s drama takes place in a storefront gypsy cab station in Pittsburgh's decaying Hill District. Former U.S. ambassador Joseph C. Wilson IV presented a lecture, "The Politics of Truth: A Diplomat's Memoir" Friday, April22, at Pattee Library's Foster Auditorium, University Park. Lecture topics were integrity in governance and the responsibility of the citizen to be better stewards of our democracy. Penn State students give back thanks to a new design course

Seating, desks, cubbies and other children's furniture was created by students on the University Park campus of Penn State in a new digital design and fabrication course offered by the Department of Architecture. The furniture was revealed during a public reception on Wednesday, April 19. It will be used in a child-care center, which was constructed by Penn Staters as part of the American Indian Housing Initiative, on the Northern Cheyenne Reservation in Lame Deer, Mont.

Erie holds Undergraduate Research and Creative Accomplishment Conference

A Fisher Scientific Lab Products Show gave faculty, staff, researchers and students an opportunity to see displays and demonstrations of the latest research equipment advances. Equipment with names like the Belly Dancer Shaker and its smaller counterpart, the Belly Button, offer research innovations at the same time they entertain novices who stop by just to see what is going on.

Touch tour helps visually impaired appreciate 'Giselle'

The Center for the Performing Arts presented the ballet "Giselle" on Friday, April 8. Before the performance, Paul Bartlet with the St. Petersburg Ballet Theatre addressed a group of community members with sight loss and their companions at a specially designed touch tour as part of the Pennsylvania Visual Access Project. It wasmade possible by a grant from Verizon through the leadership of VSA Arts of Pennsylvania.

Outreach staff sends warm clothing to Afghanistan

Penn State Outreach staff collected and sent 14 boxes full of warm coats, gloves, hats, scarves, sweaters, boots, long johns and blankets to Afghanistan to help see women and children through the grueling Afghanistan winter. New arrivals at the horse and sheep barns

It's that time of year at the horse barns on the University Park campus when many new foals are brought into the world. There are presently 62 quarter horses at the horse barns. Twelve foals have been born with seven more due to come later this spring. Additionally, there is a herd of 20 poniers used for research and teaching.

Penn State Jazz Festival features variety of bands

Mount Nittany Middle School, under the direction of John Kovalchik, was the only middle school to participate in the Penn State Jazz Festival, held Saturday, April 9, in Esber Recital Hall on Penn State's University Park campus. In all, eight bands were featured during the adjudication portion of the festival. An awards ceremony also will be held at 7 p.m., followed by a concert by Penn State Centre Dimensions and a post-concert gala/jam session. The festival began on Thursday with a combo concert, and continued Friday with master classes. Two master classes also were held Saturday.

Construction progresses on the University Park campus

Construction continues apace at University Park on several new buildings. Two are scheduled for occupancy this year. The School of Architecture and Landscape Architecture, shown, is nearing completion. Move-in begins in May and will be completed by the start of the fall semester, according to Paul Ruskin, customer service coordinator in the Office of Physical Plant.

University Police learn the ABCs of CSI at inservice session

University Police Officer Mark Allen explores crime site imaging, a device that allows police to look for fingerprints without dusting. Allen was one of 20 officers learning new techniques at an inservice training session held for University Police. The police force of 47 officers holds at least three inservice training sessions a year to keep officers up to date on advances in technology and new equipment.

Event celebrates Public Poetry Project

The fourth annual "Evening of Pennsylvania Poets" took place in Pattee Library's Foster Auditorium Thursday, March 24, in celebration of the Public Poetry Project. Each year the Pennsylvania Center for the Book, found at http://www.pabook.libraries.psu.edu online, publishes the work of poets with a Pennsylvania connection in poster form, displaying it in public places. Students immersed in Japanese culture during special dinner

Guests at Pollock Dining Commons at Penn State University Park were treated to a dinner full of the flavors, sites, and sounds of Japan at "The Imperial Dinner, A Celebration of Japanese Cuisine," served earlier this week. The event was part of Food Services' special events program, consisting of theme dinners, pace-changers and other offerings. The Imperial Dinner is scheduled for an additional four meals at varying locations this semester. An "open-air market" of fresh vegetables, spices, fruits and seafood was re-created for the occasion, both to add decoration and to educate students about Japanese culture.

Lindsay and 105 other Penn State College of Medicine students participated in Match Day, a national tradition in which students simultaneously open letters to reveal where they will complete their residencies. HUB celebrates 50 years of serving students

The Hetzel Union Building, now known as the HUB-Robeson Center, on Penn State's University Park campus will celebrate its 50th anniversary this year. To mark the milestone, the HUB-Robeson Center has photographs and memorabilia on display in the Art Alley, shown here, and in the first-floor display cases. On Tuesday, March 15, 50 years from the building's 1955 opening day, President Graham B. Spanier -- along with Vicky Triponey, vice president for Student Affairs, and Stanley Latta, director of Unions and Student Activities -- will kick off the weeklong observation at a noontime celebration in the ground floor eateries area of the HUB-Robeson Center. Symposium looks at future of American public research universitiesSymposium looks at future of American public research universities

Penn State was host for a national symposium Feb. 25-26 to examine the future of the American public research university. Roger Williams, executive director of the Penn State Alumni Association, remarked in opening the Symposium on the Future of the American Public Research University that "the impetus for this symposium is Penn State's sesquicentennial. Notwithstanding the aura of history, we wanted an event that looked forward, rather than backward. And we wanted an event that would have value not only for Penn State but also for all our sister public research universities and the higher education policy community." Japan's women's gymnastic team practices at Penn State

The Japanese women's gymnastic's team is traveling with the men's team, which competes against Penn State's men's gymnastic team tonight (March 1, 2005). While the women's team is at University Park, they used Penn State facilities to practice for their meets elsewhere. Penn State Erie celebrates Dr. Seuss' birthday

On Sunday afternoon, Feb. 27, more than 50 children from the neighborhoods around Penn State Erie and their parents gathered for the Association of Women in Communcations' (AWC) fifth annual Dr. Seuss Birthday Celebration. The student chapter of AWC invited families to the living room of the Smith Chapel for games, prizes, birthday cake and reading Dr. Seuss books. Here, Sara Kamber, president of the Association for Women in Communication at Penn State Erie, gave Anna and her friend, Julie, tips on how to make a colorful "Cat in the Hat" hat.

Penn State Altoona unveils Hawthorn Building

Penn State Altoona held a ribbon-cutting and grand opening for a new classroom building today, Feb. 24. The new 58,8000 square foot Hawthorn building houses 56 faculty offices and 24 classrooms. These include general classrooms, seminar rooms, a lecture hall, the Pechter Studio of Music (named in honor of the Pechter family, longtime supporters of Penn State Altoona and music and arts in the community), a 10,000 square foot computer center, three computer classrooms, staff offices for computer services, a food service area and full-time and part-time faculty offices.

Old Main to chime 'Happy Birthday' today

People on and near Penn State's University Park campus are hearing a different song emanating from the Old Main bell tower today (Feb. 22). Instead of the familiar Westminster Quarter chimes, "Happy Birthday" is ringing out on each quarter-hour, in honor of Penn State's 150th birthday. The Sesquicentennial Celebration chimes were recorded by Dan Armstrong, professor of music, left, and Kent Klouser, a television and editing technician with WPSX, below. Here, Armstrong demonstrates how he played the song on the chimes.

Penn State Hershey holds reunion for transplant recipients

More than 80 heart transplant recipients, including Gayle Snider, left, reunited with surgeon Walter E. Pae Jr., right, and other doctors, nurses and medical staff at Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center's annual Heart Transplant Reunion. Snider, who was kept alive for more than a year as the first U.S. patient to go home from the hospital with the Arrow LionHeart heart-assist device, received a human heart in a transplant last June.

Hall of Fame quarterback visits Penn State Erie
Former Buffalo Bills quarterback Jim Kelly came to Penn State Erie Tuesday, Feb. 8, to share his story of "True Courage." Kelly and his wife have created Hunter's Hope Foundation to support research of leukodystrophy, an inherited, progressive genetic disorder, which affects their son, Hunter.

Audience members at Saturday's Penn State Lecture on the Frontiers of Science were treated to a serenade by the speaker, Clifford M. Will, the James S. Maroon 5 is the hot ticket at University Park

Enthusiastic crowds greeted box office employees all around University Park where student sales began at noon for tickets to the Maroon 5 concert. Arthor Goldstein plays the piano during the Music at Noon series held Fridays at the HUB-Robeson Center at University Park Goldstein, a music instructor at Penn State, was part of the Andrew Jackson Jazz Showcase, which performed on the first level of the center. Libraries hold open house

The University Libraries held a an open house, featuring fun, games and prizes, Tuesday, Jan. 25. The event is held each semester to introduce first-year and new students to the Libraries' physical structure, collections and services. The goal is for each student to leave the open house feeling positive about and comfortable with the library and its faculty and staff. "Mardi Gras" was the theme of this semester's festivities. Greenhouses offer hint of summer in January
When the snow blows and the wind howls, the greenhouses on the University Park campus are good place to come in out of the cold and breath in the warm, moist air that allows greenery to survive a Central Pennsylvania winter. The greenhouses are part of the University's teaching and research missions. This pitcher plant is a carnivorous variety that traps bugs in the sacklike flowers.

Palmer collection on exhibit at University Park

The Palmer Museum of Art is showcasing "An Intimate Eye: Selections from the Collection of James and Barbara Palmer." This private collection, garnered over many years, boasts particular strengths in American painting and drawing from the mid-19th through the late-20th centuries. University's Ice Cream Short Course marks 113th year

Some 105 people signed up for the 113th Ice Cream Short Course held at University Park. Students learn the ins and outs of ice cream production and manufacturing. Lee Castillo, who works for Dreyer's Ice Cream, examines an old-fashioned White Mountain ice cream freezer in Borland Lab. The course runs through Saturday night when participants will receive their certificates for satisfactorily completing the course.

The Penn State University Park community led off its 2005 Martin Luther King Jr. Commemoration Friday with a celebration march which began at Old Main. Vicky Triponey, vice president for student affairs, addressed the participants. "As a result of the privileges we have, we have a real responsibility to give back, to do something positive. We all have work to do, but I'm proud of what we are doing in our community." University Park vigil pays respect to tsunami victims

As part of its Day of Mourning and Support, Penn State hosted a vigil today (Jan. 12) to remember those lost in the deadly tsunami that devastated the Indian Ocean region last month. The vigil, sponsored by the Office of International Programs and the International Student Council, was held on the steps of Old Main just after the noon hour. The brief ceremony  featured musical performances by students from the School of Music, remarks by individuals with ties to the region affected by the tragedy, and a moment of silence and personal reflection. Ryland Boggess was one of 26 students from the State College Friends School who attended the event. The students also held a rally of their own to raise money and awareness for the survivors.

Student Newspaper Readership Program expands pick-up locations

The Student Newspaper Readership Program has installed new newspaper boxes at those bus stops, and representatives from the newspapers were at the stops this morning to personally deliver newspapers to the students at those stops. Ice storm damages trees around University Park

An overnight ice storm left limbs and branches scattered across the campus, as well as some downed trees, including one that closed College Avenue during the morning commute hours.
