Hershey holds White Coat Ceremony
Before family and friends of incoming medical students, Harold Paz,
dean of the College of Medicine and CEO of Penn State Hershey Medical
Center, addresses the "first-years," who are about to
don the short, white coat that denotes their new role as student
physicians. At the annual White Coat Ceremony, Paz told students,
"This moment means everything; as you recite the Hippocratic
Oath today, remember why you wanted to be a physician. Write it
down now; put it in your wallet and save it. Look at it when you
graduate in 2010 ... or look at whenever you need to remind yourself
why you embarked on this glorious journey. We can only give you
the education and the white coat, but only you can make it mean
something." Currently, a White Coat Ceremony or similar rite
of passage takes place at more than 90 percent of schools of medicine
and osteopathy in the United States.
