National Academy of Engineering holds regional meeting

National Academy of Engineering (NAE) members from Northeast region met June 15 and 16 in The Nittany Lion Inn on the University Park campus of Penn State to discuss "Microwave Usage Potential and State of the Art Technology." The NAE's mission is to promote the technological welfare of the nation by marshaling the knowledge and insights of eminent members of the engineering profession. The organization has more than 2,000 peer-elected members and foreign associates, senior professionals in business, academia, and government who are among the world's most accomplished engineers.

Penn State does well at Challenge X

Alums stream to University Park for reunion weekend

Some of the more than 750 Penn State alumni from the classes of 1966, 1961, 1956 and earlier and their guests enjoyed music, conversation, and hors d'oeuvres during Thursday's welcome reception for Traditional Reunion Weekend, sponsored by the Penn State Alumni Association. Other highlights during the weekend included the 56th annual Alumni Institute, featuring nine Penn State faculty members lecturing on wide-ranging topics from Andrew Wyeth to the science of wetlands; tours of Beaver Stadium, University Libraries and more; the All-Class Luncheon on Saturday; the Alumni Gardens Dedication and Old-Fashioned Lawn Party; and class dinners, receptions, sing-a-longs and breakfasts.

High tunnels provide produce for thriving Cellar Market

Catie Rasmussen, facility manager at Penn State's high tunnels, located at the Larson Agricultural Center, surveys raised beds of salad greens, which will be sold at Cellar Market near Eisenhower Auditorium on the University Park campus. The technology behind the high towers -- huts covered in plastic like material with movable shutters -- allows the produce to mature weeks before it would during a regular central Pennsylvania growing season.

Penn State Erie holds Chem Day for local high school students

he School of Science at Penn State Erie held a Chemistry Day for more than 100 local 11th- and 12th-grade students who are enrolled in their high school's honors or advanced placement chemistry classes. Students participate in petroleum engineering camp

Twenty petroleum and natural gas engineering students, 13 chemical engineering students and 11 mechanical engineering students -- from freshmen to graduate students -- were immersed among industry experts, industry leaders and managers, and peers at Shell Exploration and Production's Petroleum Engineering Camp in Robert, La. The camp led them though a series of hands-on exercises and short courses in basic petroleum operations (drilling, production, subsea and safety engineering), and encouraged them to explore career opportunities in the oil industry. Two Penn State faculty members joined the group of students including Zuleima Karpyn, assistant professor of petroleum and natural gas engineering, who was the Penn State organizer. Drilling, production, and the helicopter underwater escape training were among the student's favorite experiences. Here, a drilling instructor shows the students a well head.

Bellefonte Central Rail Trail opens near University Park

Bike riders travel down the McKee Street/Clinton Avenue Bike Path to attend the opening ceremony for the Bellefonte Central Rail Trail on Friday, May 19. The trail, five years in the making, provides a convenient, low-impact path through Penn State's planned Arboretum.The bikers were taking part in local Bike-to-Work Day activities.

Penn State Commencement 2006

Systemwide, Penn State graduated a total of 10,355 students -- approximately 594 with associate degrees, 8,154 baccalaureate degrees, 1,284 graduate degrees, 123 medical degrees and 200 juris doctorate degrees, between May 6 and 14.

45th annual book sale does volume business

The first day of the State College Chapter of the American Association of University Women's annual book sale was bibliographic pandemonium at the Snider Ag Arena on the University Park campus. Shoppers had nearly a quarter of a million books to choose from at the sale, which runs from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. today through Monday, May 15. The sale benefits grants and fellowships for women. Learning Factory students ship experiments to NASA

Matt Sunderland, a junior electrical engineering major, troubleshoots his strain gauge experiment. The experiment is part of a payload a sounding rocket payload project, which will be launched into space between June 27 and July 6 from Andoya, Norway. The suite of six experiments will collect data during the rocket's flight to 180 km and back down to the Arctic Ocean. During this time data will be continuously downlinked to the ground for post-flight analysis. The project started in August 2003 and has involved more than 50 students from aerospace, electrical and computer engineering. It is an international collaboration with nine students from three Norwegian universities, and is taking place in conjunction with NASA Wallops Flight Facility. NASA is providing testing and launch support for the project. This is just one example of projects that take place through Penn State's Learning Factory. Tension, glee fill senior robot competition

About 100 students gathered around the game board to support teammates and fellow students competing in the biannual robot competition held by the Department of Computer Science and Engineering. The Atrium of the IST Building on the University Park campus was crowded with seniors, some bleary-eyed from last-minute tinkering with their robots. Overheard: "I don't know what it's doing. This code may never have been checked. This code was made at 5 o'clock this morning and finished about five minutes ago."

Great Valley hosts open house

Registrants sign in at the Penn State Great Valley open house which was held on April 25. The campus offers a host of courses this summer and fall to meet the needs of working professionals. Prospective students learned about graduate programs in education, engineering, information science, training design and development, leadership and management, as well as professional education programs in technology, project management and more. Arizona parks official discusses American park experience

Ken Travous, executive director of Arizona State Parks, gave a free public presentation, "Parks: The American Experience" April 21 in the lobby of the Penn State Outreach Building. "Parks are a uniquely American idea," he said. The parks movement was sparked by paintings artists created to capture the natural wonders and landscapes they saw as they traveled around the country. These images inspired Americans to join together to preserve the nation's treasures for all to enjoy. The parks movement also led to the creation of open spaces in urban areas, including Boston Commons and New York's Central Park.

More than 200 engineering students will present their solutions to real-world problems posed by industry at the Learning Factory Project Showcase from 1 to 3:30 p.m. Thursday, April 27, in the HUB-Robeson Center Alumni Ballroom, University Park. Ground broken for Hershey Center for Applied Research

In a ceremony Wednesday, April 19, members of the Pennsylvania health-care and economic development community broke ground on the first building of the future Hershey Center for Applied Research. Located adjacent to Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center and Penn State College of Medicine in Hershey, the research center will be an 80,000 square-foot facility capable of providing state-of-the-art medical research resources to emerging and established businesses. Classroom litter is a growing problem

The amount of food garbage and paper trash in University Park's general classrooms has prompted the University Committee on Instructional Facilities to explore a University-wide policy prohibiting food in classrooms, according to Bob Myrick, facilities, resources and planning architect for the committee. As it is, signs prohibiting food in the classrooms are being posted outside classroom doors every time the Office of Physical Plant does classroom renovations. Each classroom has at least one and sometimes several trash and recycling receptacles for proper disposals. Common areas and hallways also have appropriate waste disposal receptacles all clearly labeled and clearly visible.

Spring football training under way at University Park

It might feel like the Orange Bowl just ended, but the reality is that Penn State's thrilling triple-overtime win over Florida State was two-and-a-half months ago, and preparations for the 2006 season got under way shortly thereafter. Shaver's Creek prepares for Maple Harvest Festival

On Thursday, March 16, Kindergarteners and first graders from Huntingdon School District's Brady Henderson Elementary spent a day at Shaver's Creek Environmental Center, learning firsthand how maple syrup gets from the tree to the pancake. Nine students majoring in Recreation Parks and Tourism Management at Penn State manned four learning stations, as part of a semester of off-campus coursework.

Hershey medical students participate in Match Day

Soon-to-graduate Penn State Hershey medical students Christine Peoples and Kristi Nord attempt to peek through the envelopes that will disclose the name of the hospitals or other health-care facilities where they will complete their residency programs. Peoples, Nord and 111 other Penn State College of Medicine students participated in Match Day, a national tradition in which students simultaneously open letters today (March 16) to reveal where they will complete their residencies.

Rib fans rack up funds for student relief effort

A group of 50 students from the College of Agriculture and the College of Engineering are preparing to spend their spring break in Lousiana to aid in the relief effort. They are conducting a tool-collection drive and conducted a fund-raiser with Clem's Barbecue selling ribs on campus.

Thon breaks another record

After logging 48 hours of activity, last night thousands of sore feet and tired eyes were refreshed by a new high, as Penn State students, volunteers and supporters celebrated a record-setting $4,214,748.18 at the 33rd Annual Penn State IFC/Panhellenic Dance Marathon. THON 2006, themed "Together We'll Prevail," topped 2005's fund-raising total by nearly $100,000. Proceeds benefit The Four Diamonds Fund at Penn State Children's Hospital in Hershey, which supports children and families fighting pediatric cancer. Erie open house draws crowd

High school students interesting in learning more about Penn State Erie attended a Penn State Day Open House this past Saturday, Feb. 18. Prospective students met with representatives from the offices of Admissions, Career Development, Undergraduate Studies, Financial Aid, Residence Life and Student Activities, and with other student support staff. Here, visitors were asked to register when they arrived on campus. More than 600 visitors were expected.

The Oscar Mayer Wienermobile pulls into the driveway behind Old Main where it will pick up a special passenger for a ride around campus on Friday, Feb. 17. The Wienermobile visited Penn State as part of a recruiting effort to hire University students as drivers for company's goodwill vehicles.

Great Valley celebrates accreditation

Penn State Great Valley marked its recent accreditation by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB International) with a celebration on Wednesday, Feb. 15, attended by members of the entire campus community. During the event, Chancellor Diane Disney thanked many people for their herculean efforts to make the 10-year mission to earn accreditation a success. Here, Disney awards the framed accreditation certificate to Ellen Foster Curtis, management division head, who was instrumental in the effort to earn the recognition. The Nittany Lion was there to cheer them on and inspire the crowd.

Thon through the years
In 1973, no one could ever have imagined what they would be starting when the decision was made to have a dance marathon. The first Dance Marathon lasted 30 hours and was held in the HUB ballroom. It raised more than $2,000 to the Butler County Association of Retarded Citizens.

Actors rehearse for 'Monkey Trial'

Ed Asner took the stage at  the cue-to-cue lighting run through early Tuesday evening in Schwab Auditorium in preparation for the 7:30 p.m. public performance of "The Great Tennessee Monkey Trial." The purpose of the cue-to-cue was to make final technical adjustments. Asner plays William Jennings Bryan, who prosecuted the case.

-- The Tunnel of Oppression, a multimedia program that is part of the Martin Luther King Commemoration Week, began yesterday (Jan. 16) and runs through Jan. 19 in Heritage Hall of the HUB-Robeson Center on Penn State's University Park campus. The presentation is being billed as an educational and experiential journey through historical and contemporary forms of oppression. It offers an opportunity for students, faculty and staff to collectively create an interactive museum that educates the campus on issues of oppression and social justice. Tunnel hours are noon to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Jan. 17 to 19. While visiting the Tunnel of Oppression, business administration students Felix Mojica and Natasha Mayne-Flood looked at a display depicting the types of oppression that African-Americans have experienced. Penn Staters enjoy New Year's Eve in Florida

Penn Staters in Miami for the Orange Bowl had a blue-and-white New Year's Eve as they attended Penn State's New Year's Eve Celebration with President Graham B. Spanier, sponsored by the Penn State Alumni Association. The Penn State New Year's Eve Celebration began at 8 p.m., Dec. 31 in the grand ballroom of the InterContinental Miami hotel. The evening featured a performance by the renowned Penn State musical theatre students, dancing and a dessert buffet before ending at 1 a.m. on Jan. 1.
