2013 Security Conference Poster Session and Lightning Round Talks

Call for presenters

Penn State IT professionals and faculty are invited to submit proposals for poster session presentations and/or to present a Lightning Round Talk at the 2013 Penn State Security Conference. The conference is on Monday, October 28, and Tuesday, October 29, from 8:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m. at the Nittany Lion Inn.

Poster Session Proposals
The Poster Session will take place on Monday, October 28, from 2:30–4:45 p.m. Presenters may use a tabletop tri-fold board, video display, banner stand, etc. To submit a proposal, go to Submissions will be accepted until 5:00 p.m. on Friday, September 27. Applicants will be notified by October 4 if their poster has been accepted. Questions should be directed to

Lightning Round Talks
Lightning Round Talks will take place on Monday, October 28, from 10:00 a.m.–noon. Presenters will speak for five minutes to showcase their topic followed by five minutes of questions and answers with the audience. There is no deadline to sign up and some slots may be available the day of the event. To schedule a Lightning Round Talk, go to

IT Mentors Program

Share knowledge and broaden perspectives

The IT Mentors program is accepting applications for 2014. Penn State IT staff interested in participating in this nine-month program as a mentor or mentee can find program information and a link to the application form on the IT Mentors site at Questions about the program should be directed to the IT Mentors Committee listserv, Applications will be accepted through October 31, 2013.

Safety Committee

New committee to incorporate safety into ITS culture

The ITS Safety Committee is working to implement safe practices; ensure a safe working environment; and bring ITS into compliance with University safety policies, Occupational Safety and Health Administration regulations, and applicable laws. Committee members are currently creating a website to provide safety information as well as a list of activities and training programs.

Climate and Diversity Team

2013/2014 initiatives

The ITS Climate and Diversity (C&D) team welcomed several new members during its August meeting. New members are Connie Welch (CSS), Carolyn Cole (DLT), Derek Moore (ET), Angie Taylor (FS), Jerome Lumpkin (IDS), Diego Menéndez (RCC), Mike Leach (SOS), Patty Nordstrom (TLT), Christian Vinten-Johansen (TLT), and Suzanne McBride (TNS).

During the upcoming year, team members will work on several important initiatives, including strategies to help staff handle change, an anti-bullying campaign, staff recognition efforts, and unit-related communications. The C&D team encourages staff to contact team members with questions or concerns. A complete list of members can be found on the C&D website at

ITS Senior Leadership Team (SLT) Meeting Minutes

Below are the minutes from the most recent SLT meeting held on September 10. The SLT meeting minutes will be posted on the Inside ITS website after every meeting. See past minutes.

Change Management

  • Nathan Culmer, instructional designer in ITS Training Services, gave a presentation on the challenges of change management.

Space Planning in the Science Park Road Building

  • The details are being worked out to move staff from Project LionPATH (the project to replace ISIS, Penn State’s current student system) into the top floor of the Science Park Road building. January 6 is the tentative move-in date.
  • The ITS Space Committee is reviewing information from units to determine the number of employees who will be moving and potential move-in dates.

Voice Advocacy Working Group Update and Issues Related to UCS

  • SLT members received an update on the Voice Advocacy Working Group. The RFP process is currently underway.

Strategic Plan Update

  • The print and online versions of the University-wide IT Strategic Plan are in the final stages of completion.
  • Working groups to provide roadmaps and overall governance of the plan are being formed.

Customer Satisfaction Survey

  • John Harwood has received nominations from the SLT and the Information Technology Leadership Council about the fall customer satisfaction survey.
  • ITS will work with Brian McDonald’s team (MOR Associates) to select questions, administer the survey, and summarize the results.
  • ITSCollab (a group of ITS staff dedicated to making ITS and Penn State IT stronger, more efficient, and more effective) will be asked to provide recommendations on how to respond to the survey results.

Leveraging Gartner Resources 

  • Gartner is available to connect ITS with consulting services, contract reviews, document and presentation reviews, etc. Pam Fuller and John Harwood are working with Gartner to make the contract more flexible to administer.
