Support Abington students on GivingTuesday, Nov. 29

ABINGTON, Pa. — Penn State Abington alumni and friends can make gifts to support scholarships and the student emergency assistance fund on GivingTuesday, Nov. 29. The sites are open now through midnight on Nov. 29. The global day of giving is held annually on the Tuesday after Thanksgiving to encourage philanthropy during the holiday season.   

Gifts of all sizes to the Abington General Scholarship Fund are pooled and awarded to students who qualify for financial aid. The availability of scholarships to defray the cost of education is often a deciding factor for bright and motivated students who wish to attend Penn State Abington. 

While every Abington student’s story is different, the average financial gap exceeds $8,000 a year. Scholarship assistance reduces the barriers to earning a Penn State degree. The financial support students receive from the Penn State community instills a greater sense of belonging — and motivation — to cross the finish line. 

"Making a gift to the Abington General Scholarship Fund allows donors to contribute to a common fund from which substantial scholarships are awarded to academically strong students with financial need. Together, our gifts transform students’ lives," said Karen Weiss Jones, director of development and alumni relations at Abington. 

Another gift option is the Penn State Abington Student Emergency Assistance Fund. Many students live on the edge of housing, food, and transportation insecurity — a parent loses a job, a car breaks down, textbooks are expensive — and some students may think their only option is to withdraw from school.   

"Donor gifts to the Student Emergency Assistance fund are critically needed this year, as the number of students requesting assistance has increased since the onset of the pandemic. Gifts will be put to immediate use by Student Affairs staff in the spring semester, helping students remain enrolled and persisting toward earning their degrees," Weiss Jones said.
