ALTOONA, Pa. — A new book by co-authored by Jared Frederick, instructor in history at Penn State Altoona, has been published.
Major Dick Winters of the 101st Airborne gained international acclaim when the tale of he and his men were depicted in the book and miniseries "Band of Brothers." His iconic World War II exploits have since been commemorated with monuments and other art.
In "Hang Tough: The WWII Letters and Artifacts of Major Dick Winters," Frederick and co-author Erik Dorr use the wartime correspondence between Winters and naval reservist DeEtta Almon to paint a portrait of life on the home front and battlefront — capturing the humor, horror, and humility that defined a generation.
