MELVILLE, N.Y. (August 2011) -- David Bradley, professor of acoustics and senior scientist at the Applied Research Laboratory at Penn State, was elected president of the Acoustical Society of America (ASA). Bradley's one-year term began May 2011 after which he will succeed the current president.
"The ASA has been a career-long, 'go to' society for me, to both interact and work together with colleagues," noted Bradley. "It has also provided the opportunity to contribute to ASA goals and the honor of the Presidency allows me to continue that, a privilege for which I am most grateful."
Bradley's research centers on underwater acoustic propagation, scattering from complex ocean boundaries and ambient noise in the sea. His post as ASA president caps more than three decades of distinguished service and commitment to ASA's mission.
Bradley received a bachelor’s and master’s degree in physics from Michigan Technological University in Houghton in 1963 and 1960, respectively, and a doctorate in mechanical engineering from the Catholic University of America in 1970.
Prior to his leadership post with ASA, Bradley has served as director of the NATO Underwater Research Center, La Spezia, Italy; superintendent of the Acoustics Division of the Naval Research Laboratory; and mine warfare technical adviser to the Chief of Naval Operations.
His seminal contributions to the field of acoustics have been recognized with many awards and leadership positions within the ASA. They include the Meritorious Civilian Service Award, 1982; and Superior Civilian Service Award, in 1993 from the Department of the Navy. In ASA he served as chair of the Underwater Acoustics Technical Committee, 1988-1991; on the Executive Council 1991 to 1992; as associate editor 1997-2001, and as chair, Medals and Awards Committee, 2003-2010.
About the Acoustical Society of America
The Acoustical Society of America (ASA) is the premier international scientific society in acoustics devoted to the science and technology of sound. Its 7,000 members worldwide represent a broad spectrum of the study of acoustics. ASA publications include The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America (the world's leading journal on acoustics), Acoustics Today magazine, books, and standards on acoustics. The society also holds two major scientific meetings each year. For more information about ASA, visit the website at http://acousticalsociety.org online.
