UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — The Criminal Justice Research Center at Penn State will be hosting its inaugural crime, law and policy-focused career expo from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 30, in Alumni Hall, HUB-Robeson Center. The Government and Public Sector Career Expo will allow students to access various agencies and organizations as a way to explore career paths, network with recruiters, and pursue experiential opportunities and enrichment.
There will be substantial representation from state and federal agencies such as the FBI; Drug Enforcement Administration; Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives; Pennsylvania Office of State Inspector General; Dauphin County District Attorney’s Office. Representatives from Penn State graduate programs and undergraduate organizations will also be present to discuss involvement and educational planning.
Criminal Justice Research Center Director Derek Kreager describes the event as “an exciting opportunity for students to speak directly to those agencies responsible for our security, law enforcement and social policy. We are honored to support it and glad to have so many University partners agree to participate with us. The large number of attending agencies is a testament to the pre-existing relationships Penn State has with the criminal justice community and the hard work of our staff and faculty. The event should only get stronger in years to come and further strengthen Penn State’s community service mission.
“This event offers students majoring in sociology, criminology, IST [information sciences and technology], social data analytics, public policy, and international affairs the opportunity to meet representatives from a variety of career sectors as they’re seeking internships, jobs and graduate programs," said Kreager.
At 10 a.m., the newly appointed Secretary of the Pennsylvania Board of Pardons, Brandon Flood, will kick-off the event as the featured speaker. Flood will discuss not only his personal story but also issues and trends he sees within the criminal justice field and how students can best prepare for careers in these areas.
