Center for Global Studies presents faculty and student awards

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — The Penn State Center for Global Studies (CGS) recently presented awards to faculty members and students whose work crosses boundaries and builds bridges by linking themes of sustainability, social justice, and ethical leadership within a global context.  In so doing, the awards encourage recipients to engage in cross-disciplinary teaching, outreach and research that allow for sustained and engaged dialogues on issues of vital importance to understanding key global issues.

Awards presented and 2017 recipients include:

  • Faculty Career Development Award — Ran Zwigenberg, assistant professor of Asian studies, history, and Jewish Studies
  • Graduate Student Career Development Award — Bin Chen (history); Johann Le Guelte (French and Francophone studies); Xiaoran He (history and Asian studies)
  • Graduate Fellow Award — Xiangyun Xu (history)
  • Summer 2017 Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) Graduate Fellowships — Samantha Billing (history); Yucatec Maya (history); Sara Davis (Spanish and Portuguese); Katrina Ihrer (Arabic and international affairs); Eden Kinkaid (Hindi and geography); Aubrey Waddick (Chinese, political science, and Asian studies)
  • 2017-18 Academic Year FLAS Graduate Fellowships — Lauren Fritzsche (Arabic and geography); Derek Gideon (Arabic and comparative literature); Stephanie Lopez (Japanese and comparative literature); Samantha Shoppell (Japanese, art, and education); Marie Louise Ryan (Hindi and geography).
