UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — The College of Engineering Design Showcase is set for 1 p.m. on Dec. 10 at the Bryce Jordan Center.

The showcase is the culmination of a semester-long effort by engineering students to design prototypes and remedies to real-world challenges posed by industry clients.

The event is free and open to the public.

Engineering students from the senior capstone design courses in biomedical engineering, computer engineering, computer science, electrical engineering, engineering design, engineering science and mechanics, industrial engineering, materials science, and mechanical engineering will present their solutions to real-world engineering problems and design challenges.

The fall 2015 capstone assignments are sponsored by 50 local and national firms and government agencies, including Bechtel, Boeing, Capital One, Dow Chemical Company, Ford Motor Company, Manitowoc Cranes, New Leaf Initiative, PepsiCo-Frito-Lay, Philips Ultrasound, Quaker Chemical Corporation and Volvo Group.

The event will feature efforts by first-year students in EDSGN 100: Introduction to Engineering Design, who will display their first-year client-driven design project, sponsored by GE Transportation.

Students were tasked with designing a freight system for a city looking for a cost-effective solution that reduces smog and meets EPA requirements, while maintaining or increasing freight capacity into and out of this important port city.

Students in EDSGN 130 will present their final design project, a community center for a small rural town with a population of 600 to 3,000.

Projects and posters will be judged for awards sponsored by BP and Lockheed Martin.
