Faculty publishes book on strategy, human resource management and performance

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — Associate Professor of Human Resource Management (HRM) Elaine Farndale, along with Jaap Paauwe, professor of human resource studies at Tilburg University, published the book, "Strategy, HRM, and Performance" earlier this year. The book was published in the United States by Oxford University Press in January 2018, and was released in the U.K. in November 2017.

According to the Oxford University Press website, the book "expounds the macro-level relationship between strategy, HRM, and performance, addressing important challenges that have constrained research and practice to date. Adopting a critical perspective, the first challenge is a narrow definition of 'performance' that has been largely driven by a managerialist, profit motive, with little regard for the human element."

Farndale also is affiliated with the HR (human resources) Studies Department at Tilburg University in the Netherlands. She holds a doctorate in HRM from Cranfield School of Management in the U.K. Farndale’s specialist areas of interest and research include international and comparative HRM; the status, professionalism and roles of the HR department; HRM and firm performance; and HRM and employee engagement. She has presented numerous papers at international conferences and has published articles and chapters in both the practitioner and academic press, such as Journal of World Business, Sloan Management Review, Human Resource Management, Human Resource Management Journal and International Journal of Human Resource Management. She also has worked previously as an HR specialist for several years.
