Food Science student team wins national competition

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. -- A student team representing the Food Science Department in Penn State's College of Agricultural Sciences recently took first place in the Institute of Food Technologists Student Association College Bowl.

The Penn State team of Jared Smith, of Lebanon, Pennsylvania; Latha Murugesan (team captain), of India; Ken Vogel, of Erie, Colorado.; and Timothy Yeung, of Phoenixville, Pennsylvania -- all Food Science majors -- defeated Ohio State University in the final round.

Other schools competing in the finals were North Carolina State University, Chapman University, University of Minnesota, Texas A&M University, University of California, Davis, and University of Georgia.

The championship took place at the Institute of Food Technologists annual meeting and Food Expo in New Orleans June 21-24. The Penn State team finished both the regional and national rounds with an undefeated record.
