Gugino recognized by the National Academic Advising Association

Jeffrey Gugino, a senior undergraduate studies adviser in the Division of Undergraduate Studies, recently earned a 2015 National Academic Advising Association (NACADA) Outstanding Advising Certificate of Merit, awarded annually in recognition of significant contributions to the delivery and improvement of academic advising in higher education.

Nominators cited Gugino’s collegiality, mentorship and enthusiasm, as well as expert knowledge of the University’s academic programs and processes as testaments to his value as an adviser, student advocate and educator. In particular, his commitment to the exploratory process and work with special programs for prospective and current undergraduates reflect his commitment to advising excellence and student success.

David Smith, associate dean for advising and executive director of the Division of Undergraduate Studies, characterized Gugino’s work as a leading example of the ways in which “academic advisers shape and inform the experiences of undergraduates.”

“When I think of what academic advising at Penn State, or for that matter any institution, should look like, it is the way Jeff builds trust with his students and colleagues that immediately comes to mind,” Smith said. “He consistently displays a passion for the work he does and through his efforts empowers individual students to take ownership of their education.”

Gugino formally received the Outstanding Advising Certificate of Merit on Oct. 4 during ceremonies held at the association's annual conference.

NACADA's membership includes faculty and staff advisers, administrators, counselors and others in academic and student affairs concerned with the intellectual, personal and vocational needs of students. NACADA specifically promotes quality academic advising and professional development of its membership to enhance the educational development of students.
