Gutgold accepts new position with Schreyer Honors College

CENTER VALLEY, Pa. – Nichola Gutgold has been promoted to full professor of communication arts and sciences. She has also accepted a new position as associate dean of academic affairs for Penn State's Schreyer Honors College. In addition to her professorial duties, she formerly served as coordinator of the Corporate Communications degree program at Penn State Lehigh Valley. Gutgold will begin her new position, located at the University Park campus, on July 1.

As associate dean for academic affairs, she will be responsible for developing honors courses in partnership with academic units across the University, expanding global study initiatives, enhancing academic advising for honors students within the individual colleges and overseeing honors students' successful completion of degree requirements.

While at Penn State Lehigh Valley, Gutgold has served as a professor of communication arts and sciences, and has written or co-authored a number of books examining communication by women in male-dominated fields. Her most recent books, both of which were published in 2012, include "The Rhetoric of Supreme Court Women: From Obstacles to Options" and "Gender and the American Presidency: Nine Presidential Women and the Barriers They Faced," which she co-authored. She has been the recipient of Penn State Lehigh Valley's Teaching Excellence Award, Research Achievement Award, Advising Excellence Award and Student Appreciation Award. In addition to her work in the classroom, she has led Penn State students on study tours through China and Europe, and spoken frequently about women, media and politics, including a 2013 TEDxPSU talk on women and the American presidency.

In announcing the appointment, Schreyer Honors College Dean Christian M. M. Brady said that Gutgold brings great energy to her new role. "Dr. Gutgold has been an avid supporter of honors education at Penn State Lehigh Valley," Brady said. "We look forward to her enthusiasm and passion for the success of Schreyer Scholars extending beyond the classroom and expanding the opportunities for academic enrichment available to our students."

Gutgold succeeds Arun Upneja, who is leaving Penn State at the end of June to become dean of Boston University's School of Hospitality Administration. Upneja, a professor of financial management in Penn State's School of Hospitality Management, joined the Honors College as associate dean in July 2010.
