UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. -- Taylor C. Hornung will be the student marshal for the College of Engineering at Penn State's fall commencement ceremony on Dec. 21. Hornung will receive a bachelor of science degree in mechanical engineering.
He has chosen H. Joseph Sommer, professor of mechanical engineering, to be his faculty escort.
College of Engineering student marshals are selected for their outstanding academic achievement and contributions to engineering student life.
Hornung is the son of Rebecca and William Hornung of Hollidaysburg, Pa. He is a 2009 graduate of Hollidaysburg Area High School.
His Penn State awards and honors include the President's Freshman Award, the President Sparks Award and the Evan Pugh Scholar Award (junior and senior). He was named to the dean's list every semester.
He is a member of the Tau Beta Pi Engineering Honor Society, the Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society and the Alpha Lambda Delta National Honor Society for First-Year Students.
Hornung was the recipient of the Joseph B. Wharton Memorial Scholarship, the Arthur Wilcox Memorial Award in Mechanical Engineering and the Louis A. Harding Memorial Scholarship.
His extracurricular activities include co-founding the 3D-Printing Club, where he holds the office of president. Prior to becoming president, Hornung served as vice president and coordinated outreach demonstrations at local schools to promote emerging technologies and encourage students to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics. He also was a member of the Fencing Club (2013) and the Robotics Club (2012).
Hornung's additional accomplishments include an internship with KCF Technologies, where he assisted with the design and testing of advanced prosthetic patient monitoring systems, and another with S.P. McCarl & Company, where he was involved in mechanical contracting job cost estimation.
Following graduation, Hornung will pursue a master's degree in mechanical engineering at Penn State.
