SHARON, Pa. — Penn State Shenango will continue its 2016-17 Faculty Lecture Series with Tamrya d’Artenay, instructor in biology, at noon on Thursday, April 20, in Room 105 of Sharon Hall. The title of her lecture is “Why You Should Care About Sustainability Everyday — Not Just on Earth Day.” The event is free and open to the public.
Unsustainable practices are threatening the future of human societies. From climate change to rainforest destruction, humans are changing the biosphere on a time scale never witnessed before. We live in a time of instability, a time of now or never. This will be the generation that decides how future people will live. Will we accept green energy policy? Will we overhaul our industrial food production system to limit waste and water usage? Can we learn to modify our over-consumptive behaviors while still meeting basic human needs and affording economic growth, environmental protection and social equality to all peoples around the world? Let’s find out.
D’Artenay teaches courses in biology, as well as environmental science and sustainability. She received her doctorate in plant biology from Southern Illinois University Carbondale.
Soon after joining the Shenango campus, d’Artenay received the Penn State Shenango Leonard Riforgiato Teaching Award. An expert in botany, she is well-published and has presented nationally. She is an active faculty member supporting the campus’ summer STEM camp as well as its annual Earth Fest event. Outside the University, she is an avid swimmer and has competed in two triathlons this past year.
