Lecture on bias in language technologies to be presented April 5

Talk is part of the Young Achievers Symposium presented by the Center for Socially Responsible AI

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — Su Lin Blodgett, a postdoctoral researcher in the Fairness, Accountability, Transparency, and Ethics group at Microsoft Research Montréal, will present a free public lecture titled “Towards Equitable Language Technologies” at 4 p.m. Tuesday, April 5. The lecture is part of the Young Achievers Symposium series hosted by the Center for Socially Responsible Artificial Intelligence and will be held live via Zoom View Webinar. No registration is required.

Blodgett’s research examines the social and ethical implications of natural language processing (NLP) technologies. She develops approaches for anticipating, measuring and mitigating harms arising from language technologies, focusing on the complexities of language and language technologies in their social contexts, and on supporting NLP practitioners in their ethical work.

Upcoming lectures in the Young Achievers Symposium series include:

  • April 12: "Challenges and Frontiers in Deploying Transparent Machine Learning" by Umang Bhatt, doctoral candidate in the Machine Learning Group at the University of Cambridge, from 4 to 5 p.m. on Zoom
  • April 26: Paidamoyo Chapfuwa, postdoctoral research fellow at Stanford University, from 4 to 5 p.m. on Zoom

Previous lectures can be viewed at the Center for Socially Responsible Artificial Intelligence website.
