Legro’s fertility research receives award

Research led by Penn State College of Medicine’s Dr. Richard Legro and funded by the National Institutes of Health was recently honored at the joint meeting of the International Federation of Fertility Societies and American Society for Reproductive Medicine in Boston. “Effect of letrozole versus clomiphene on live birth in women with anovulatory infertility due to polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS): a randomized double-blind multi-center trial” is work done in the Reproductive Medicine Network (RMN), a nation-wide effort of the National Institutes of Health.

Legro, professor of obstetrics and gynecology, and public health sciences, was the lead investigator of this nationwide study and also leads the RMN site at Penn State Hershey, which was recently refunded with a $1.7 million grant. Almost 1,000 abstracts were presented at the IFFS/ASRM meeting, where more than 10,000 people registered for the meeting.

Legro’s research won the top Scientific Program Prize, which was shared with another paper.

Letrozole and clomiphene are two oral drugs used in the treatment of women with fertility issues who wish to become pregnant.
