Logan named distinguished visiting professor at Tsinghua University in China

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — Bruce Logan, Kappe Professor of Environmental Engineering and Evan Pugh University Professor in the College of Engineering at Penn State, has recently been named a Distinguished Visiting Professor at Tsinghua University in Beijing, China.

Logan has been a guest professor there and has collaborated with Tsinghua researchers for a number of years, primarily in the area of electricity and biofuels production using microbial fuel technologies.

He will be traveling to China May 8-13, during which time he will visit Tsinghua University from May 10-13, after spending the first few days at Harbin Institute of Technology, where he also serves as a visiting professor.

He will be welcomed by Fang Zhang and Xiaoyuan Zhang, his former doctoral and postdoctoral students, now assistant professors at the university, as well as his longtime collaborator there, Xia Huang.

On May 11, Logan will give a seminar at the university, titled "Salinity gradient energy and thermal batteries."

“I look forward to future collaborations with these researchers,” said Logan. “For the next few years, I’m planning to give several lectures to the students there.”

His lectures will be based on his book and graduate class at Penn State on the topic of environmental transport processes.

Logan has hosted several visitors from China, and in particular Tsinghua, over the years. Many of his former students and visiting scholars from China now hold faculty positions around the world.

A member of the University faculty since 1997, Logan serves as director of the Penn State Hydrogen Energy Center, and the Engineering Energy and Environmental Institute. He is a member of the U.S. National Academy of Engineering, a fellow of the Water Environment Federation and the International Water Association, and a former Fulbright Scholar and Leverhulme Fellow. He has received many other awards throughout his career.

Besides Tsinghua University and Harbin Institute of Technology in China, Logan also serves as a visiting professor at Newcastle University in the United Kingdom. He was previously the International Francqui Chair at Ghent University in Belgium and a Global Research Partner with the King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST) in Saudi Arabia as one of 12 founding KAUST Investigators.
