McKenney receives Fannie Lou Hamer-W.E.B. Dubois Service Scholarship

READING, Pa. — Breana McKenney, a senior majoring in professional writing at Penn State Berks, was honored with the 2016 Fannie Lou Hamer-W.E.B. Dubois Service Scholarship at the Penn State Martin Luther King Jr. Awards Banquet on Friday, Jan. 15, at Penn State's University Park campus.

According to the nomination, McKenney has demonstrated “impressive leadership skills in her role as a student mentor, showing genuine empathy for students adjusting to college life.” At Penn State Berks, she serves as a multicultural mentor, an events planner, a peer tutor, and a teaching assistant for a first-year seminar course. She is also a residential adviser for her residence hall.

The Fannie Lou Hamer-W.E.B. Dubois Service Scholarship recognizes one Penn State undergraduate student for excellence in service embodying the characteristics of civic life — specifically those individuals who take an active role in initiating and maintaining a healthy community for others. The recipient of this scholarship must demonstrate a commitment to the promotion of student engagement with service in the African-American community, combined with strong academic performance.
