UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — Guha Manogharan, assistant professor of mechanical engineering and industrial engineering at Penn State, has been awarded the Emmert H. Bashore Faculty Development Professorship.
Mechanical engineering professor named Bashore Faculty Development Professor
“I am both humbled and grateful for this recognition,” Manogharan said. “Working with students, both in the lab and the classroom, is the favorite part of my job.”
The professorship, internally funded by the College of Engineering, is intended to supplement departmental support for an outstanding engineering faculty member during the critical early years of their academic careers.
“Dr. Manogharan is well deserving of this honor,” said Karen A. Thole, distinguished professor and mechanical engineering department head. “He has significantly contributed to our educational courses in additive manufacturing and is also making research impacts in his field. The support of this professorship will allow him to accelerate these activities and provide impactful opportunities for his students.”
The recipient of a National Science Foundation Faculty Early Career Development Award, Manogharan focuses his research efforts on additive manufacturing (AM), commonly referred to as 3D printing.
He leads the Systems for Hybrid-Additive Process Engineering (SHAPE) Lab, which explores AM design, material development, biomedical applications, hybrid manufacturing and 3D sand printing for metal casting.
In recognition of his contributions to the field of AM, Manogharan received the 2018 International Outstanding Young Researcher in Freeform and Additive Manufacturing Award and the 2017 SME Outstanding Young Manufacturing Engineer Award.
The Bashore endowment funding will help Manogharan engage more students in his lab and support current and future research projects.
“I believe the Bashore endowment is also a reflection of what my students have been able to accomplish in the SHAPE Lab,” he said. “I am excited to support their work further through this professorship.”
