'The Moth' program to enable students to share their educational story

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. -- Penn State College of Education undergraduate and graduate students are encouraged to share their educational story when a three-day production of "The Moth" comes to Chambers Building and the Bryce Jordan Center Sept. 21-23.

It is a three-day commitment for students with two sessions available: Group A is from 4-6 p.m. on Sept. 21-22 in 214 Chambers and from 7-9:30 p.m. on Sept. 23 in the Founders Room in the Bryce Jordan Center. Group B is from 7-9 p.m. on Sept. 21-22 in 214 Chambers and from 7-9:30 p.m. on Sept. 23 in the Founders Room as well.

The Moth Education Program works with young people and educators to build community through storytelling workshops, performances and innovative resources, according to its website, http://themoth.org. Participants learn to shape selected life experiences into well-crafted stories.

“If they’re in education, it’s a good platform to learn how to express themselves and succinctly say something,’’ said Alicia McDyre, director of the Childhood and Early Adolescent Education program and assistant professor in the College of Education.

“It’s great for job interview training; when you’re on the job market and you have to explain a certain point in a short amount of time, this will be helpful in that, too. It’s also a place to tell a powerful educational story that in the media right now is not being told,’’ McDyre said.

McDyre noted that "The Moth" provides students with an opportunity to get their stories out there in a positive way. “This is a way to share positive, empowering moments with the public that you might never get a chance to do,’’ she said.

Students interested in participating should e-mail Kerri Kopcha at kdl111@psu.edu.
