New associate dean for medical education for University Park Curriculum named

Dr. Mark Stephens selected for leadership role after serving as interim since July 2021

HERSHEY, Pa. — Penn State College of Medicine has named Dr. Mark Stephens, professor of family and community medicine, as the associate dean for medical education for the University Park Curriculum following a national search. He has served in an interim role since July 1, 2021.

Stephens came to Penn State in 2016 as a clinician, scholar and educator in the College of Medicine’s University Park Curriculum track at the University Park regional campus. Before joining the College of Medicine, he served for more than 20 years as a physician in the U.S. Navy, retiring as the chair of the Department of Family Medicine at the Uniformed Services University in Bethesda, Maryland.

An avid ambassador of Penn State, Stephens completed his undergraduate degree in liberal arts at Penn State and holds a master’s degree in kinesiology, also from Penn State. He received his medical degree from Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine in Cleveland. His professional interests include physician wellness, exercise medicine and the use of art to promote professional identity formation in medical education.
