UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — Penn State Clinical and Translational Science Institute’s data collection and storage tool, REDCap, now offers an option to protect against malicious software, known as "bots," from completing fraudulent surveys. When completing a survey, users will complete a CAPTCHA process.
CAPTCHA is short for "completely automated public Turing test to tell computers and humans apart." It uses images or audio to require human interaction. Without this feature, bots can complete a large number of surveys automatically.
REDCap, which stands for Research Electronic Data Capture, is a secure, web-based application for databases and online surveys for research purposes. It is compliant with the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) to collect protected health information.
