Newest course in Online Faculty Development series explores career advising

The career advising course is one of the more than 20 offerings available the rest of 2022

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — A new professional development course for online Penn State faculty and staff explores the best practices for advising students on career topics.

“Excellence in Academic Advising: Career Advising” is the latest course in the Penn State World Campus Online Faculty Development series on academic advising. The career advising course will be offered in October of the fall 2022 semester and in April 2023.

Registration for the October course is now open on the Online Faculty Development website.

The course, which is listed as OL 3875, is aimed at Penn State faculty members or other employees who are interested in learning more about career advising, whether they work with online learners or students at one of Penn State’s campuses.

The course was co-authored by Lynn Atanasoff, the lead career counselor for Penn State World Campus Student Affairs, and Matt Ishler, associate director for Penn State University Park Career Services. Atanasoff will lead the course in October.

Course development was managed by Dawn Coder, the senior director of World Campus Academic Advising and Student Disability Services. Penn State World Campus Learning Design created the course.

“Recognizing the hand-off points from academic advising to career services is essential,” Coder said. “This course will cover these best practices.”

The career advising course is part of a new certificate, Foundations of Academic Advising, that faculty and staff can complete through Online Faculty Development. The certificate includes courses on the foundations of academic advising and advising under-resourced students.
