Online geospatial certificate program receives accreditation

The graduate certificate program was recognized for its quality and leadership by the U.S. Geospatial Intelligence Foundation

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — Penn State has received industry accreditation for a certificate in its online geospatial portfolio.

The United States Geospatial Intelligence Foundation (USGIF) recognized Penn State’s Graduate Certificate in Geospatial Intelligence Analytics, which is offered online in partnership with the Penn State College of Earth and Mineral Sciences through Penn State World Campus.

“We are pleased that our geospatial intelligence program once again meets the rigorous requirements outlined in the USGIF accreditation standards and criteria,” said College of Earth and Mineral Sciences associate teaching professor and program director Gregory Thomas. “Students in our program can be confident that they are obtaining the necessary GEOINT competencies and skills to obtain a competitive advantage in this discipline.”

The certificate in geospatial intelligence analytics is a 15-credit program that teaches students to apply geospatial information science and technology, knowledge of spatial relationships, and cognitive processes to improve problem-solving and decision-making. The curriculum of the online certificate program addresses the needs of both current and aspiring GEOINT professionals working in imagery analysis, GIS or GIS data analysis, homeland security and more.

USGIF is a nonprofit education foundation that promotes and develops the geospatial intelligence industry. The accreditation through USGIF runs through the end of 2029. The certificate program offered online through Penn State World Campus is one of the 21 accredited programs across the nation.

“There is a critical need for a robust talent pipeline in the geospatial intelligence field,” said Ronda Schrenk, USGIF CEO. “USGIF accreditation elevates the programs training future GEOINT talent. We are proud of our academic partners.”

Thomas added, “Penn State has been a long-time supporter of the USGIF and was one of the first academic programs to be accredited by the organization.”

When students earn their certificate from Penn State, they also receive a certificate from the USGIF. Successful completion of accredited programs showcases the individual’s foundational knowledge, technical skills, and critical thinking abilities to make a difference in the GEOINT community.

The certificate is part of the comprehensive portfolio of geospatial degree and certificate programs offered online. Students can focus on disciplines in homeland security and geographic information systems through one of nine online programs.
