LEMONT FURNACE, Pa. — Nursing students from Penn State Fayette, The Eberly Campus, have won the 12th annual Western Pennsylvania SNAP Student Nurse Challenge, held at Penn State New Kensington on Feb. 22.

“We won due to the skill and acumen of our students. Their teamwork, congeniality, and knowledge were unmatched. Every nursing instructor at Penn State Fayette had a hand in this achievement.”

Ten nursing schools were invited to assemble teams of students to answer questions based on the nationwide examination for the licensing of nurses (NCLEX). Nursing Instructor Deborah Stoy, who teaches the senior-level NCLEX prep course at Fayette, coordinated the team with help from Damien Zsiros, nursing instructor.

Fayette advanced through three rounds to the final competition, ultimately succeeding against LaRoche. This is the first win for the campus.

“We won due to the skill and acumen of our students, said Zsiros. "Their teamwork, congeniality, and knowledge were unmatched. Every nursing instructor at Penn State Fayette had a hand in this achievement.”

The event is sponsored by the Student Nurses Association of Pennsylvania (SNAP). Participating nursing schools included Mt. Aloysius, Butler County Community College, Citizens, Conemaugh, Indiana University of PA, LaRoche College, UPMC St. Margaret, Westmoreland County Community College and West Penn.

Zsiros added, “Participating in this event has validated our students’ knowledge base, afforded them a professional learning experience, and shown them what it takes to become expert registered nurses.”
