Penn State launches online master’s degree in electrical engineering

Applications are being accepted for admission in the spring 2016 semester

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — Penn State is now offering its master’s degree in electrical engineering in an online format through Penn State World Campus to provide engineers a convenient and flexible way to gain the credentials that can help advance their careers.

The 30-credit online master of engineering in electrical engineering program offers foundations in theory, research and applications that will enable graduates to work in a variety of industries, such as architectural design, semiconductors and other electronic components manufacturing, the federal government and more.

Applications are being accepted for admission in the spring 2016 semester.

“Penn State has long been known for its high-quality engineering degree programs, and we are excited to offer this degree in an online format for the first time,” said Robert Gray, associate professor of electrical engineering at Penn State Harrisburg and the lead faculty member for the new online program. “This degree was designed to help prepare engineers for a broad range of careers, from electric power and utilities to electronic control systems.”

Courses will be taught by faculty from the Penn State Harrisburg School of Science, Engineering and Technology and the Penn State College of Engineering. The degree will be delivered online through World Campus, which this year was ranked No. 5 for best online graduate engineering programs by U.S. News and World Report.

“Our online degrees are developed to accommodate adult learners’ busy lives,” said Renata Engel, associate vice provost for Online Programs. “They will be able to work toward their goal of advancing their career while balancing their job, family and education.”

The program consists of nine credits in core classes in electrical engineering, and students can then specialize in fields such as signal processing, communication systems, power systems, electronics, control systems and stochastic processes, electromagnetics and microelectronics. Students will be required to complete a scholarly paper to graduate.
